WHEREAS,Chuck Varilek and Julie Varilek served the students,parents,
families,and community of Estes Park over the past 25 years as dedicated
instrumental and vocal music instructors,directors,and performers;and
WHEREAS,Chuck began his own school career in a one-room school house,
graduated from Tyndall High School,and received his degree Summa Cum
Laude from the University of South Dakota;and
WHEREAS,Chuck taught band for ii years in South Dakota prior to beginning
his career at Park School District R-3 in 1989;and
WHEREAS,Julie was born and raised in Pocahontas,Iowa.She attended the
University of South Dakota where she received her degree in Music Education.Julie
and Chuck met in Vermillion,South Dakota in the fall of 1974;and
WHEREAS,Julie taught music in South Dakota schools for ii years,and for five
years in Loveland,Colorado,prior to beginning her career with Park School District
R-3 in 1995.Her teaching assignments included choir,computer,reading,and music
classes at both the elementary and middle school levels;and
‘WHEREAS,Julie was honored as the Estes Park Pride Award —Teacher of the Year in
201o;and
WHEREAS,Chuck received the Tommy Thomson Award in 1999,was recognized for a
2005 Boettcher Teacher Award,and received the Estes Park High School Purple Apple
Award.Under Chuck’s direction,the Estes Park High School band has earned two State
Championships,in 199$and 2004,and advanced to the State Finals for Marching Band
for the past i8 years;and
WHEREAS,Chuck managed and directed the Village Band and the Jazz Big Band;and both
Chuck and Julie have been performing in these community bands for the past 25 years.Chuck
and Julie have served the community as musicians at Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church
and participants in numerous Rotary Club scholarship fundraisers and musical performances;
and
WHEREAS,Chuck and Julie Varilek have been married for 35 years and have two daughters,
Jenny and Audra,both of whom are following in their parent’s footsteps and pursuing careers in
the field of education.
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and Board of Trustees of the Town
of Estes Park do hereby acknowledge May 13,2014,as
“CHUCK and JULIE VARILEK DAY”
