HomeMy WebLinkAboutPROCLAMATION Steige, Paula Laing 2016-05-19Qtc.arft,(otorabo to clamatlo ii WHEREAS,Paula Laing Steige’s grandparents,Jessica and Ed Macdonald,settled in Estes Park in 1908,nine years before the incorporation of the Town;and WHEREAS,Jessica opened a little book and gift shop in the Macdonald’s home on Ellthorn Avenue in 1928,and ran it until her death in 1957;and WHEREAS,Paula began spending her summers in Estes Park in 1945 and helped her mother and grandmother in the bookstore since the age of i;and WHEREAS,Paula moved to Estes Park in 1975 and “is the only place she calls home;”and WHEREAS,Paula retired from her teaching job at Estes Park High School in 1982 to run Macdonald Book Shop full-time,making it into a community landmark and cultural icon,open 361 days of the year; and WHEREAS,over time,Paula has served this community as a member of Rotary,a member of EPURA,and as a Town Trustee;and WHEREAS,she has been a longtime member of the Estes Park Museum, having donated to the Museum her grandparent’s first home,the Cobb/Macdonald cabin;and WhEREAS,over the years Paula has been constant in her advocacy for preserving the unique character of Estes Park and its history,contributing to the public memory through the creation of an oral history for the Museum. NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and Trustees of the Town of Estes Park do hereby proclaim Paula Laing Steige the recipient of the 2016 Pioneer Award,presented by the Estes Park Museum Friends &foundation on this day,the 19th of May,2016.
