WHEREAS,the American Cancer Society is dedicated
to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing
cancer,saving lives,and diminishing suffering from cancer
through research,education,adovacy and service;and
WHEREAS,in May 1985,Dr.Gordy Klatt,a Tacoma,
Washington surgeon,traveled 81 miles while he ran and walked
on a local track for 24 hours,raising $27,000 to support the
American Cancer Society;and
WHEREAS,the following year,220 supporters on 19 teams
joined Dr.Klatt in this overnight event,and the American Cancer
Society’s Relay for Life was born;and
WHEREAS,the Relay for Life is the American Cancer
Society’s signature activity to raise funds for research and programs
to benefit cancer survivors and their families;and
WHEREAS,each year the Relay for Life raises millions of
dollars for the fight against cancer;and
WHEREAS,June 6 &7,2003 will be the Second Annual
Relay for Life in Estes Park;and
WHEREAS,the 15-hour gathering offers cancer survivors
fellowship with family and friends and provides support and
encouragement for one another.
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and Board of Trustees oftheTownofEstesParkdoherebyproclaimJune6,2003 as
REM YFOR LIFE DA Y
in the Town of Estes Park,and urge all citizens to join in this family-fun event tocelebratelifehonorcancersurvivorsandrememberlovedones.
