HomeMy WebLinkAboutPROCLAMATION Mental Health Awareness Month.,:( WHEREAS,increased focus on the prevention of mental health conditions and substance use disorders among children and adolescents through screening and early intervention helps improve lives;and WHEREAS,comprehensive,community-based services that respond to individuals with mental health needs are cost-effective and beneficial to consumers and our community;and WHEREAS,access to necessary medication and appropriate treatment helps prevent individuals from ending up in emergency rooms and jails;and WHEREAS,people with lived experience of mental illness and/or substance use disorders receive better,live-in recoverv,and provide invaluable knowledge of how to improve and transform systems of care;and WHEREAS,it costs 7 times more to incarcerate someone with mental health issues than to treat them in the community;and there is a strong and growing body of evidence that supports the cost effectiveness and benefits to communities that have successfully implemented continuums of mental health care. NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and Board of Trustees of the Town of Estes Park do hereby proclaim May 2019,as Mental Health Awareness Month in the Town of Estes Park,and encourage citizens,government agencies,public and private institutions,businesses and school districts to reaffirm our commitment to improving the overall health and well-being of our community;to increasing awareness and understanding of mental health,substance use disorders and co-occurring disorders;and the need for appropriate and accessible treatment and care of all people who have experienced these illnesses. April 23,2019 (tc rk,(otorbo to riamatto a WFIEREAS,Mental I-Iealth Month has been observed since 1949 to raise awareness of mental health conditions and the importance of mental health;and ‘VHEREAS,we are all affected by mental health,one in four Coloradoans experience mental health conditions or substance use disorders,or both,each year;and WHEREAS,the stigma against mental health conditions remains one of the greatest barriers to improving the lives of all Coloradoans;and WHEREAS,mental health systems of care must be designed to meet the needs of-the people being served;5096 of all people with mental health conditions experience them by age 14,and 74%by age 24;and WHEREAS,trusting and respectful relationships are the basis for successful treatment, engagement,and recovery;and ©2005 www.MUnicipalAwocdscornpany corn Culiman,A1 (256)739-595] Qtt arft,otorabo to tlamatto ii WHEREAS,mental health is essential to everyone’s overall physical health and wellbeing;and one in five citizens is affected by mental health issues in a given year;and MTHEREAS,great strides have been made in our understanding of mental health issues and vast improvements in the dialogue surrounding it,vet,too many in our community still suffer without access to the care they need;and W1EREAS,we too often think about mental health differently from other forms of health yet,like any disease,mental illnesses can be treated-and without help,can grow worse;and WHEREAS,a continuum of care including prevention,early identification and early intervention along with crisis care,treatment and stabilization and recovery services, are effective ways to address mental health issues;and WHEREAS,comprehensive,community-based services that respond to individuals with mental health needs are cost-effective and beneficial to consumers and our community;and WHERFAS,access to necessary medication and appropriate treatment helps prevent individuals from ending up in emergency rooms and jails;and ‘WHEREAS,recognizing the importance of mental health services in our community is critical to individuals,families,businesses,law enforcement,healthcare providers; and MTHEREAS,it costs 7 times more to incarcerate someone with mental health issues than to treat them in the community;and WHEREAS,there is a strong and growing body of evidence that supports the cost effectiveness and benefits to communities that have successfully implemented continuums of mental health care;and NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and the Trustees of the Town of Estes Park do hereby proclaim May 2018 as Mental Health Awareness Month in Estes Park,Colorado.As the Mayor,I also call upon the citizens,government agencies, public and private institutions,businesses and school districts to commit our community to increasing awareness and understanding of mental health,and the need for appropriate and accessible treatment and care for all people who have mental health issues.
