HomeMy WebLinkAboutPROCLAMATION Estes Cares About Bears MonthQftt arft,totorabo to tiamatlo ti for people,bears and Since people’s actions affect black bear are directly dependent on all Estes Valley IIVHEREAS,bears eat anything,we must all reduce conflict by eliminating human food sources such as garbage,bird feeders,compost and other attractants that change the natural feeding behavior of black bears.Allowing bears to access these food sources threatens public safety and in the end,results in the killing of problem bears;and ‘WHEREAS,for the fourth consecutive year,the Estes Valley Bear Education Task Force —comprised of citizens,businesses,and local,state and federal governmental agencies —has focused on preventing conflicts with bears and demonstrating that “Estes Cares About Bears;”and ‘WHEREAS,the community has a greater sense of awareness and desire to reduce bear conflicts as a result of the efforts of the Bear Education Task Force. This is also the result of the Estes Park Police Auxiliary’s Litter Patrol and community sponsorship of wildlife-resistant public trash containers followed by the Town of Estes Park’s upgrading of all remaining containers;and WHEREAS,after a lengthy public process,the Estes Park Town Board approved the Wildlife Protection Ordinance,which will go into effect April 1, 2016,and enacts new trash regulations for residents and businesses within Estes Park town limits;and WHEREAS,through the “Estes Cares About Bears”campaign,community leaders, businesses and citizens can together help raise awareness about the need to keep human food sources away from bears;and ‘WHEREAS,on May 7,the Estes Park News will invite all residents and guests to support this important cause at the first annual “Big Bear Concert”at the Estes Park Events Complex;and WHEREAS,keeping bears wild requires the entire community’s involvement.We encourage all residents and guests,children and adults,to adopt bear-responsible habits. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand William C.Pinkham,Mayor Attest March 22,2016 ©2005 www.MunicipaLl (256)739-5951 €tt park,(otorabo to tiamatto II ‘WHEREAS,the Estes Valley is a great place for people,bears and other watchable wildlife.Since people’s actions affect black bear behavior,the lives of bears are directly dependent on all Estes Valley residents and guests;and ‘4THEREAS,bears eat anything,we must all reduce conflict by eliminating human food sources such as garbage,bird feeders,compost and other aifractants that change the natural feeding behavior of black bears.Allowing bears to access these food sources threatens public safety and in the end,results in the killing of problem bears;and ATHEREAS,for the third consecutive year,the Estes Valley Bear Education Task Force —comprised of citizens,businesses,and local,state and federal governmental agencies —has focused on preventing conflicts with bears and demonstrating that “Estes Cares About Bears;”and ‘WHEREAS,as of 2014,over 100 Estes Valley restaurants and lodges have pledged to keep bears wild by responsibly managing trash and other attractants;and WHEREAS,Rocky Mountain National Park,a loyal participant in the Task Force,has acquired a National Wildlife Federation/Disneynature Impacts grant, in part,to assist in furthering Estes Valley bear education;and MIIIEREAS,law enforcement and wildlife officials have noted fewer bear conflicts as a result of the efforts of the Bear Education Task Force and most importantly,the efforts of residents and businesses across the Estes Valley.Reduced bear conflicts are also the result of the Estes Park Police Auxiliary’s Litter Patrol,community sponsorships of bear-resistant public trash containers,and the continued generous efforts of Waste Management to support responsible business practices;and ‘WHEREAS,through the “Estes Cares About Bears”campaign,community leaders, businesses and citizens can together help raise awareness about the need to keep human food sources away from bears;and ‘WHEREAS,keeping bears wild requires the entire community’s involvement.We encourage all residents and guests,children and adults,to adopt bear-responsible habits. We encourage all residents and guests,children and adults,to adopt bear- responsible habits.
