WHEREAS,the Town of Estes Park,Colorado has been
the beneficiary of Dr.James H.Pickering’s selfless
dedication to expanding our knowledge and
understanding of Estes Park history,and the talents and
creativity that have energized and advanced preservation
philanthropies in the Estes Valley;and
WTHEREAS,Dr.Pickering has published 46 books,articles,
and reviews on the history and literature of Colorado and the
Estes Park region,and Dr.Pickering provided the Estes Park
community with free access to his new book,Essays Old and
New,due to the Covid-19 pandemic;and
WHEREAS,Dr.Pickering has served as the Town of Estes Park’s
Historian Laureate since his appointment in 2006;and
‘WHEREAS,Dr.Pickering received his undergraduate degree from
Williams College (Massachusetts)and his M.A.and Ph.D.from
Northwestern University (Illinois),and served as Professor,Dean,
Provost and President (1992-1995)of the University of Houston;and
‘WHEREAS,Dr.Pickering has felt himself to be a part of Estes Park since
coming as a child in 1946 when his family started vacationing in a 1916-
vintage log cabin near the Twin Sisters Peak,and became a part-time
resident of Estes Park in 1992 and a full-time resident in 2013;and
‘WHEREAS,Dr.Pickering serves or has served in leadership positions on the
board of directors of the Rocky Mountain Conservancy,the Estes Park
Economic Development Corporation,and the Estes Park Museum friends &
Foundation,as a member of the editorial board of the Estes Park Trail-Gazette
and the Estes Valley Community Fund Committee of the Community
Foundation of Northern Colorado;and
WHEREAS,Dr.Pickering openly shares his vast knowledge with residents and
visitors and is always ready to tell a great story.
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and the Board of
Trustees of the Town of Estes Park do hereby recognize,
Dr.James H.Pickering,III
the recipient of the 2020 Pioneer Award,presented by the Estes Park Museum
Friends &foundation,Inc.on this day,the 6th of November 2020.
