WHEREAS,motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause
of death for children 5 to 15 years of age.A study by the
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration concluded
children are safer in the backseat;and
WHEREAS,airbags are lifesaving devices,but special
precautions must be taken when driving children in airbag equipped
vehicles;and
WHEREAS,injuries to children can be prevented by following simple
guidelines such as buckling up every child in the backseat of the
vehicle;and
WHEREAS,the Optimist International Child Program “Always Buckle Children in the
Backseat”raises community awareness of the need to safely place children in cars;
and
WHEREAS,the Optimist Clubs and their members continue to sponsor and support
programs for children,they are committed to make a difference for children in the
community with this exciting new program.
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that April 19-25,1998,is hereby designated
ALWAYS BUCKLE CHILDREN IN THE BACKSEAT WEEK
in the Town of Estes Park for the purpose of encouraging all our citizens to join with
the Optimist Clubs in carrying the message of safety for our children to other
citizens,and by example,exercise responsible citizenship.
