HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESOLUTION 19-020RESOLUTIONNO19-020WHEREAS,ArticleXVIII,Section11oftheColoradoConstitution,limitsthetermsofelectedofficialsoftheTownofEstesParktotwoconsecutiveterms.ThisprovisionwillbeeffectiveforelectedofficialsoftheTownattheApril2004MunicipalElection.WHEREAS,recentexperienceintheEstesValley,includingthelastMunicipalElectionandSpecialDistrictElectionindicatethatindividualsarenotwillingtorunforelectedoffice.Termlimitsforincumbentelectedofficialswillonlyfurtherlimitthenumberofpersonswillingtorunforelectedoffice.WHEREAS,removaloftermlimitsontheBoardofTrusteesoftheTownofEstesParkwillenableanypersontorunforofficeandbeelectedifthevoterswishtoelectsaidperson.rusteeshasreceivedpetitionsandrequeststhatthebegiventheopportunitytovoteonabaflotquestionlimitsforelectedofficialsoftheTown,includingtheNOWTHEREFORE,beitresolvedbytheBoardofTrusteesoftheTownofEstesPark,Colorado:InresponsetopetitionsandrequestsfromcitizensoftheTownofEstesParkandtheEstesValley,theBoardofTrusteesherebyauthorizesthesubmissionofthefollowingballotquestiontotheregisteredvotersoftheTownofEstesParkatthegeneralelectiononTuesday,November5,2002,forthepurposeofallowingthevotersoftheTownofEstesParktovoteontheeliminationoftermlimitsformembersoftheBoardofTrusteesandMayorasthesameissetforthinArticleXVIII,Section11oftheColoradoConstitution.WHEREAS,removaloftermlimitsfromelectedofficialspreventanypersonfromchallenginganyincumbentifsomeonewillonlyallowincumbentstocontinuetoserveiftheysodesirethem.VotersshouldbeentitledtovoteforanypersonforTownwishestoservewithoutlimitingthetermofthatindividual’sserviceWHEREAS,theBoardofTvotersoftheTownofEstesParkeliminatingthelimitationontermofficeofMayor.oftheTownwillnotchoosestodoso.ItandthevoterselectBoardifthatpersonontheTownBoard.
