HomeMy WebLinkAboutPROCLAMATION International Dark Skies 2025-04-21€<StKS ^arfe, Colorabo rodamation WHEREAS, the aesthetic beauty and wonder of a natural night sky is a shared heritage of all humankind; and WHEREAS, the experience of standing beneath a starry night sky inspires feelings of wonder and awe, and encourages a growing interest in science and nature, especially among young people and visitors within the local community; and WHEREAS, So percent of the world's population live under a dome of light pollution, in which excessive artificial lighting disrupts the natural darkness, and they may never experience the visual wonder or ecological and health benefits of living under a dark sky; and WHEREAS, light pollution represents a waste of natural resources and energy amounting to roughly $3 billion per year in the United States and contributes to diminished energy security; and WHEREAS, reducing the wasteful use of light helps keep funds in communities through energy savings, lower maintenance costs and longer- lasting fixtures; and WHEREAS, dark sky certification can significantly enhance the tourism industry by attracting visitors who are interested in stargazing and astrotourism. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and Board of Trustees of the Town ofEstes Park, proclaim April 21, 2025 through April 28 2025, as INTERNATIONAL DARK SKIES WEEK in the Town ofEstes Park, Colorado and all citizens are encouraged to raise awareness and support for protecting our precious dark sky resources.
