This review includes evaluation of the existing structure’s ability to handle the additional gravitational loads associated with the new system. Evaluation assumptions: 1. The structure is in conformance with the building codes at time of construction. 2. Bracing required by original designer/manufacturer is installed as required. 3. The conditions of the overall roof structure are consistent with those represented in the initial site inspection photos and as provided by Next Energy Solar in the Site Survey package. Evaluation Criteria: Code: IRC 2015 Edition; ASCE 7-10 Wind speed: 175 mph (3-sec gust) Risk Category: II Exposure Category: C Elevation: 7875 ft Ground Snow Load: 65 psf Mean Roof Height: 20 ft Roof Pitch: 18 degrees Construction Type: Rafters Rafter Size, Spacing: 2x4 rafters @ 24” O.C. Roofing Material: Asphalt Shingles Number of Panels: 6 (Roof #1), 21 (Roof #2), 22 (Roof #3), & 13 (Roof #4) Panel Area: 127.98 ft2 (Roof #1), 447.93 ft2 (Roof #2), 469.26 ft2 (Roof #3), & 277.29 ft2 (Roof #4) 06/19/2023 REVIEWED BY SAFEBUILT 06/23/2023 06/19/2023 1104 Industrial Blvd. Albion, MI 49224 (913) 304-2381 The addition of the PV system will result in design loads less than 105% of the loads the structure is currently designed for. The live load can be omitted in the areas where the PV system will be installed as there will no longer be access. In my professional opinion the existing roof is adequate for carrying the additional loads associated with the proposed solar array system with the following conditions: 1. Construction shall conform to all pertinent state and local building codes and ordinances. 2. It is recommended that roof attachments alternate between rafters to distribute loads. 3. The engineer-of-record shall be consulted if conditions other than those specified in this letter are encountered. 4. Attachments shall be Everest K2 Systems Splice Foot XL with M5 x 60mm DIN 571 hex head lag screws with minimum 2” embedment installed per manufacturer’s specifications with a maximum spacing of 48” unless permitted in writing by the engineer. 5. All components shall be installed per manufacturer’s specifications. The solar array will be mounted parallel to the existing roof no more than 6” above the roof surface. Any change in wind loads to the structure from the panel addition are assumed to be negligible. Regards, Dunley M.
