Riser - A board attached to the vertical cut surface of a stair stringer.
Stringer - The diagonal board used to support treads and risers on a stairway.
Tread - The horizontal surface of a stair.
Fascia - Vertical boards that face outwards from the edges of the deck, attached to the
rim joists.
Top Rail - The upper horizontal piece that connects rail posts and supports balusters.
Bottom Rail - The lower horizontal piece that connects rail posts and supports
balusters.
Baluster - The vertical pieces of a railing spaced at regular intervals between posts.
Rail Cap - The top horizontal trim on railing.
Rail Post - The vertical post connected to the deck framing that supports the railing.
Decking -The boards used to make the walking surface of the deck.
Post - Footer Concrete filled hole that the post is attached to.
Joist - A horizontal frame piece that supports the decking and spreads the weight over
the beams.
Beam - A horizontal framing piece, which rests on posts and supports joists.

General notes:
1. Construction documents are valid for a single use at the project location and shall not be reused, copied, or reproduced without
written approval of the registered design professional in reasonable charge.
2. General notes and typical details are provided as a supplement to the construction documents and apply where specific notes
and details are not available. Specific notes and structural details shall take precedence over general notes and typical details.
Structural requirements shown in the framing plans and in the structural shall take precedence over structural notes indicated in
architectural sections.
3. Printed dimensions shall take precedence over scales shown on construction documents. The registered design professional in
reasonable charge does not warrant the accuracy of scaled dimensions.
4. Approval by the inspector does not imply approval by the registered design professional in reasonable charge. Structural
specifications that are unclear or ambiguous shall be referred to the registered design professional in reasonable charge for
interpretation or clarification.
5. The contractor is responsible for the methods, means and sequence of all structural erection except when specifically noted
otherwise in the construction documents. The contractor shall provide temporary shoring and bracing, providing adequate
vertical and lateral support during erection. Shoring and bracing shall remain in place until all permanent members are placed and
all final connections are completed.
6. The contractor is responsible for standard connections unless notes otherwise. The contractor shall obtain additional assistance
from the registered design professional in reasonable charge for all non-standard connections.
7. The contractor agrees that, in accordance with generally accepted construction practices, the contractor will be required to
assume sole and complete responsibility for job site conditions during the course of construction of the project, including safety of
all persons and property. This requirement shall be made to apply continuously and not be limited to normal working hours. The
contractor further agrees to defend, indemnify and hold owner and engineer harmless from any and all liability, real or alleged, in
connection with the performance of work on this project, exempting liability arising from the sole negligence of engineer.
Disclaimer:
1. In as much as the site review of an existing structure for the purpose of observing the structure conditions requires
that certain assumptions be made regarding existing conditions and because some of these assumptions may not be
verifiable without expending additional sums of money or destroying otherwise adequate or serviceable portions of the
building, the Client agrees that, except for negligence on the part of the Engineer, the Client will hold harmless, indemnify
and defend Engineer from and against any and all claims arising out of the professional services we have provided.

Min. Stair Hand/Guard Rail Requirements (R311.7 - R312):
1. Stairways to be not less than 36" in width
2. Risers = 7 3/4" max
