Attn: Shane Fry, PE
Regarding: Nicky’s Steakhouse Estes Park – Kitchen Hood and Exhaust Fan Replacements
JVA, Incorporated Project Number: 20809
Dear Mr. Fry,
As per your request, we made a site visit to visually observe the as-constructed structure.
A fire under one of the hoods spread into the entire hood system. Therefore, the Estes Park Fire Department is
requiring that the entire hood system be replaced.
The existing 22 feet long main hood (comprised of two sections), fire system, exhaust fan, grease duct, make-up
air duct, make-up air fan, and controls will be replaced. The new system will have two exhaust fans. There is a
second low proximity back shelf style hood that will also be replaced with a new exhaust hood, exhaust
ductwork, exhaust fan, fire system, controls and possible a make-up air fan with ductwork.
Subsequent to our site visit, we have performed a review of the proposed new equipment and a structural
analysis of the components within the existing roof system that will be supporting the new equipment.
We have made the following assumptions as part of our analysis:
A. Wood roof trusses @ 48” c/c. Truss members are 4”x10.”
B. 2x6 T&G wood roof decking.
C. 15 PSF roof dead load.
D. Estes Park ground snow load = 65 PSF.
E. Proposed new Kitchen Hood weights;
I. #1 = 886 lbs.
II. #2 = 892 lbs.
III. #3 = 193 lbs.
IV. #4 = 306 lbs.
F. Proposed new exhaust fan weights;
I. EF1 = 161 lbs. Associated curb weight = 37 lbs.
II. EF2 = 161 lbs. Associated curb weight = 37 lbs.
III. EF3 = 196 lbs. Associated curb weight = 38 lbs.
IV. EF4 = 290 lbs. Associated curb weight = 38 lbs.
G. Proposed new make-up air fan (SF1) weight = 1366 lbs. Associated curb weight = 94 lbs.
Based on the assumptions listed above, our field observation of the as constructed structure, and our subsequent
analysis of the key structural members, it is our opinion that by distributing the new loads to multiple supporting
members, the change in loading to any single members is less than the 5% allowed by the International Existing
Building Code. Therefore, we anticipate that structural strengthening will not be required. Please reference
attached Sketches SK-1 and SK-2 (Appendix A) for typical load distribution Details.

Please also note that this is a somewhat complicated roof structure. There appears to be several small building
additions and well as roof overbuild areas. The entire roof structure was not visible. We request that you send
photos during construction so that we can verify our assumptions.
Please contact us if you have questions pertaining to this letter, calculations, and details, or if we may be of
further service regarding this matter.
Sincerely,
JVA, INCORPORATED
