Renewal by Andersen Minimum Installation Standards (revised 10/14) 1
Renewal by Andersen
Minimum Installation Standards
There are many types of openings into which Renewal by Andersen® windows can be
installed into. Each type of opening and each individual opening may have any one or
more of many varying existing conditions. Understanding that the existing conditions
will determine many of the specific installation details and that it is up to the installer to
comply with local requirements and best practices, it is expected that each Renewal by
Andersen window will be installed to meet the following minimum requirements:
1. Anchoring
a. Through the Jamb:
- Install one #8 pan head screw at each pre-drilled installation hole.
- Jamb to be supported with shim at each installation screw.
- Minimum screw embedment into structural material is 1”.
- No fasteners to be installed through sills (except as indicated for
picture windows and casement/awning window units greater than
40”).
- If anchoring into pressure treated lumber or fire retardant treated
lumber, screws must be of approved corrosion resistant material.
b. Through Nailing Flange:
- Flange method applies to Renewal by Andersen product utilizing
accessory nailing flange (Renewal part no. 7500806). Nailing
flange can be used on Renewal by Andersen full frame products,
Base Frame and Extension Jamb frames only.
- Flanges are to be full width and height of window and applied full
perimeter of window.
- Prior to installation, the flanges are to be joined and sealed at each
corner with nailing fin corner seal (Renewal by Andersen part
no. 7500718).
- When anchoring window to wall, install one galvanized roofing
nail through each pre-punched hole in flange.
- Each nail to penetrate structural material (solid wood) a minimum
depth of 1”.
- Upon completion of anchorage, the nailing flanges are to be sealed
to window frame with a continuous 3/8” fillet bead of sealant, full
perimeter of window frame.
c. With Jamb Clips:
- Jamb clip method applies to Renewal by Andersen product
utilizing jamb clips (Renewal by Andersen part no. 7500782 for
Full Frame Windows and 9032314 for current casement,
awning and gliding windows Base frame or Extension jamb
frame). Jamb clips can be used on Renewal by Andersen full
frame, Base frame or Extension jamb frames only.
Renewal by Andersen Minimum Installation Standards (revised 10/14) 2
- Jamb clips should be applied around all four (4) sides of window
and placed 6” from each corner, then spaced no more than 18”
apart.
- Jamb clips should be positioned at an angle 90 degrees to jamb
when anchored.
- Jamb clips should be secured to jamb of window unit with full
engagement into locking features (profiles) on jamb. Jamb clip
attachment to jamb is to also include placement of a #8 screw
through pre-punched hole in clip, anchoring to wall of window
jamb.
- Each jamb clip should be anchored to opening with a minimum of
two (2) 8d nails or #8 screws with at least 1” penetration into
structural material.
2. Joining
a. To be done in accordance with Renewal Product Installation Manual.
b. Each end of join should be anchored to opening with a minimum of four
(4) #8 screws, each with a minimum of 1” penetration into structural
material:
- Full Frame Steel Joins – Anchor through flanges of end brackets
at both ends of joint (Renewal by Andersen part no. 7500651).
- Full Frame Wood Joins – Anchor both ends of joint to rough
opening with two (2) jamb clips on each end (Renewal by
Andersen part no. 7500782), one on each side of joint.
- Insert Joins – Anchor though flanges of mull anchor (Renewal by
Andersen part no. 7501601).
c. Note: Any mull anchor fasteners used on the drainage surface of a sill or
sill flashing must be corrosion resistant material and sealed to help prevent
water entry into wall.
3. Shimming
a. Renewal by Andersen windows are to be set so that sill is supported in a
flat position. Flat position can be achieved by:
1. Full support of existing opening.
2. Shimming - If shims are required under sill to achieve a flat
condition, support is required under end of sill (directly
below side jamb). Additional shims under sill should be
spaced no more than 12” apart. Also place shims on each
side of a mulled unit under each side jamb and under the
meeting stiles of a gliding window unit.
b. Shims used under sill must be non-compressible, flat, plastic
shims.(such as Renewal by Andersen 7500653-PKG 1/16” and
7501047-PKG 1/32”)
c. Shims are required between side jambs and rough opening at each pre-
drilled installation hole.
Renewal by Andersen Minimum Installation Standards (revised 10/14) 3
d. Shims are to position and support sills and jambs straight to within 1/16”
overall.
e. Shims are to position and support window frames square to within 1/8”
as measured diagonally.
f. Shims are not to be installed above head jambs.
4. Water Management
a. INSERT METHOD:
(Units being installed into pre-existing window frames are to be
installed by the “insert method”.)
When installing a new window into the frame of an existing window,
the entire perimeter of insert window must be sealed to the existing
window frame.
- Existing wall flashings must remain in place and left intact
and undamaged by installation procedure.
- Primary sealant joint must be a continuous, durable joint
between insert window frame and existing window frame.
* An exception is over-fit / flush fin type installations in which
the new window flange is sealed to face of an existing metal
window frame. In an over-fit installation, the sealant joints
between sill flange and existing window frame must be
discontinuous to facilitate drainage. There should be two (2)
1”-2” voids in the primary and secondary seals, both near weep
holes of pre-existing frame.
Primary seal is a properly configured and tooled butt joint, fillet
joint or lap joint bead as detailed in ASTM-E2112. Joint-type
depends on geometry between new frame and existing frame.
Primary seal is to occur between the new window frame and
existing window frame. Sealant joints between trim
components and siding are not considered primary seals.
b. Complete Replacement Method:
Units being installed into rough openings (in which the pre-existing
window frame has been removed from the wall) are to be installed
using the “Complete Replacement method”.
When installing a new window into a rough opening in which the
pre existing window frame was completely removed, the new
window is to be integrated with the existing building envelope.
Renewal by Andersen Minimum Installation Standards (revised 10/14) 4
- Sills must be flashed prior to placement of window. Sill
flashing must be a flexible membrane or preformed vinyl. A
metal pan that extends full width of wall provides a thermal
bridge and should be avoided in cold climates.
- Sill pans are to include side dams and back dams. Back dams
may interfere with interior trim detail. In these cases, a
continuous bead of sealant with closed cell foam backer rod or
closed cell aerosol foam sealant will function as a back dam.
- Mull anchors, and fasteners that penetrate sill flashing must be
sealed with sealant.
- Sill flashing will shed water to either:
1. Weather Resistant Barrier (WRB) consisting of properly
lapped house-wrap or felt paper.
2. Exterior surface of wall (siding).
- If a WRB exists behind the exterior cladding
(siding/stucco/brick), the new window should be
sealed/integrated to this membrane using flexible adhesive-
backed (butyl) flashing tape at least 4” wide and lapped in proper
shingle fashion. This may require removal or cutting back of
exterior cladding to gain access to WRB.
- If a WRB is not present behind the exterior cladding or if it is
not possible to access the WRB, or if there are any indications
that the WRB is not draining correctly, the new window should
be flashed so that water is shed to exterior surface of wall
cladding.
- Head Flashing:
Reuse existing drip cap and/or rigid head flashing if one is
present and functioning properly.
If no drip cap or rigid head flashing exists or if the existing
one is in poor condition, install a new one.
Head flashings (drip caps) must be a corrosion resistant
metal such as galvanized steel, stainless steel, copper or
aluminum.
Head flashings must have a vertical leg of at least 1½” in
height extending up under the WRB.
Head flashing must have a vertical front leg of at least ½”
that extends down over the front of the window frame or
trim. This front leg should occur at least 3/16” out from
face of frame or trim to facilitate drainage away from
window.
If installing a new rigid head flashing, the ends should be
cut and folded down over the ends of window frame, head
trim or wood drip cap.
Renewal by Andersen Minimum Installation Standards (revised 10/14) 5
Head flashings must be full length across width of window
and continuous across join.
Under side of head flashing must be sealed to top of
window frame.
The joint occurring between top side of head flashing and
the siding above the window is to be left open. This joint is
unsealed to facilitate proper drainage.
Barrier Wall Integration:
If the wall is not a membrane drainage wall, but rather an outer surface
barrier type wall (like a concrete foundation wall), new window is to be
sealed directly to wall with a continuous sealant joint around perimeter of
window.
5. Insulating and Air Sealing
a. The space between the new window frame and the opening, behind
primary seal must be filled and/or sealed to help prevent conduction and
air infiltration around perimeter of unit.
b. Insulation and air sealing material must be glass fiber or closed cell
aerosol foam sealant. If closed cell foam is used, it must be low expansion,
low pressure type intended specifically for doors and windows.
c. If gap between window frame and opening is too narrow for the placement
of closed cell foam or glass fiber, seal the interior side of gap with caulk
sealant.
d. Application of insulation must not distort jambs or sill. Jambs and sill
must remain straight to within 1/16”.
e. When sill pans are used, space under window must not be filled to the
extent that drainage will be prevented. Fill only the interior edge of this
gap with sealant or insulating foam to create a back dam.
6. Exterior Trim
a. Fibrex® exterior trim used with insert units must be sealed to existing
window casing with 3/8” fillet bead of sealant. Bottom end of Fibrex
material trim should be left unsealed for drainage.
b. Dimensional trim such as wood, PVC, etc. can be applied in watershed
fashion over the drainage plane as if a siding material. Top edge of trim
should be integrated with siding by use of a rigid head flashing.
c. Coil stock trim should be applied in water-shed fashion starting at sill
working up sides, then finishing with head flashing and drip cap. Head
flashing to tuck under existing WRB, if present.
d. There should be no reverse laps with coil stock trim.
Renewal by Andersen Minimum Installation Standards (revised 10/14) 6
e. All coil stock trim profiles are to be fully supported by existing wood trim
or with new wood backing material.
f. Trim components that interface with siding material should be sealed to
siding.
Note: These standards represent minimum requirements for the matters addressed above.
Renewal by Andersen Corporation prepared these standards based on AAMA published
standards and other industry sources. These standards do not replace the more complete
information included in the Renewal by Andersen Installation Manual. These standards
do not address all potentially applicable local codes or other requirements. It is always
the responsibility of the installer to make certain that any installation complies with all
local requirements and best installation practices.
