SUZY BLACKHURST P.O. Box 334 ESTES PARK, CO 80517 (970) 586-4104 To: Town Trustees Date: November 6, 1996 Re: CACEP Funding Having spent considerable time watching and listening, I feel it appropriate to let you know I sincerely question the advisability of providing any funding to an arts organization that appears to feel burdened by its self-defined role in fostering community arts (Trail Gazette, Nov. 6, 1996). I point to the examples set by the Fine Arts Guild of the Rockies' own recent "regifting" program and its sponsorship of a major community arts festival. Example #1: The Guild developed guidelines for and advertised a program for playwrites to submit an original work in a "judged" contest and is in the process of selecting the top work that will be performed by local actors and actresses early in 1997. Funding for this program is being provided entirely by membership support, admission fees for those attending the program and volunteer energies. Example #2: The Guild annually sponsors the Fine Arts and Fine Crafts festival, producing and mailing hundreds of entry forms, judging the submissions and producing the festival with volunteer energies. Financing for this festival is provided through the organization's membership dues. Because I am no longer an active member of this organization, I do not know the specific amount each of these activities cost the Fine Arts Guild, but I am certain that neither is accomplished with a full time salaried individual, or office with standard overhead (rent, utilities and accompanying office equipment). Should the Cultural Arts Council of Estes Park want to continue sponsoring programs like Imagine This!, the Lakefront Arts Fest and Student Expressions, it should consult its members and garner financial support to remain operational by relying on individual and organizational support. The Fine Arts Guild of the Rockies is just one example of a group (there are others as well) that appears to have mastered the art of making things happen without a governmental stipend. Sincerely, Suzy Blackhurst

It will go far beyond providing better-than- adequate performing space although that's certainly a big"plus" from fhe actor's viewpoint. It is always a satisfying experience to perform in The Hall, despite the problems presented by its age and condition. My fellow actors and I have endured blocked toilets, the need to go outside and around in the snow wearing costumes suitable for a tropical island just to "make an entrance," the need to wear heavy clothing to protect against the cold during rehearsals, lights that "ghost" during apardcularly ignihcant moment dressing rooms that leak and provide only rug-covered dirt floors, and more. Yet there is something about the space and its importance to this community, coupled with its potential, tllat keeps us coming back for more. A renovated Hall would not only provide a more suitable venue for stage productions but would also offer the opportunity to include exhibitions of works by local and regional visual arhsts and, Iexpect, space for workshops and meetings - maldng it truly a community arts center. Ihave another personal senlimental reason to be passionately in favor of the renovation: My mother, a Metropolitan Opera soprano in the '305, told me before her death that she had once presented a concert series at The Stanley during that time. I think of her every time I perform on the Stanley Hall stage and I want that piece of my history to be preserved. I believe that Estes Park's future as a vital and thriving community can be achieved and that the Town of Estes Park; the business community, arts organizations and individual performing and visual artists can work together to make it a reality.
