MEMORANDUM To: Public Safety Committee From: Fire Chief Scott Dorman Date: June 20,2004 Subject: Extension of MOU with RMNP Background: The Estes Park Volunteer Fire Department and Rocky Mountain National Park currently have a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to provide services and assistance between the two agencies. The MOU was due to expire on July 20,2003. In July 2003, the Town Board approved a one-year extension to the MOU. The Estes Park Volunteer Fire Department, on behal f of the Town o f Estes Park, and Rocky Mountain National Park are having discussions concerning updating this MOU and feel there are some new issues that need to be addressed in the MOU. Budget: There is no budget impact. Recommendation: Both agencies feel the MOU should be extended for an additional year in order to continue to provide services and equipment between the two agencies. During this extension period, the discussions will continue with a goal of creating a new MOU.

While informative discussions have occurred between the park and town regarding a new Memorandum of Understanding, a final agreement will not be available by the expiration date. In order to continue to provide for personal services and equipment required for both structural fire and wildfire suppression, the National Park Service and Town of Estes Park agree to extend the existing agreement for the period of one year beyond the current expiration date listed above. No new proposals are adopted or changes made to the existing agreement as a result of this extension.
