Background: The Estes Park Volunteer Fire Department (EPVFD) currently has a budgeted line item amount of$20,000 per year for fire hydrant installations. The cost for fire hydrant installations is very site specific. In the past, the budgeted amount has yielded the installation ofthree or four hydrants. This year, six (6) locations were submitted to Rocky Mountain Consultants (RMC) for consideration. Of these six, two are currently under contract for installation, three proved not to be viable sites due to the distance from the water mains and one site is viable but at an increased cost. This last site is located on the north side ofBig Thompson Ave. at Lakefiont Street. Currently there are no fire hydrants along Big Thompson Ave. between the west and east intersections of Grand Estates Dr. This section of Big Thompson Ave. is fronted by accommodations and a health club on the south and condominiums on lhe north side ofthe highway. This location requires a short water main extension running from Raven Circle to the north side ofthe Big Thompson Ave. and I.akefront intersection. The addition ofthis hydrant will provide faster access to the water supply, which can translate into a lower loss of lif& and/or property should an incident occur in this area. A purchase order has been written for $20,000 for fire hydrant installations in the year 2000. The total cost for the two fire hydrant installations forthe year 2000 is estimated at $10,070, leaving a balance of $9,930 in the purchase order. Budget: The cost ofthis project has been estimated by Kitchen and Co. through RMC at $25,400 - $29,500 ( based on the current cost per foot contract fee from Kitchen and Co.) Recommendation: The EPVFD proposes using the remaining line item funds of $9,930 for the year 2000 and the budgeted amount of $20,000 for the year 2001 for a total of $29,930 to cover the estimated project cost of $25,400 - $29,500. The EPVFD also recommends the use of Kitchen and Co. for this installation through their current contract with the water department.
