TOVEN oF ESTES I,ARI<4_ 1 173:Fel=-rm·mn Memo TO: Community Development Committee From: Bo Winslow, Fairgrounds and Events Manager CC: Jacqueline Halburnt Lowell Richardson Betty Kilsdonk Date: January 7, 2010 RE: Road Closure - Estes Park Frost Giant Background: The 31 St annual Estes Park Frost Giant is a 5k and 1Ok race that starts and finishes on MacGregor Avenue in front of the Municipal Building on January 31, 2010. The race staging and finishing is on the section of MacGregor Avenue between Elkhorn Avenue and Park Lane. The 5k race goes up MacGregor Avenue to MacGregor Ranch, around a part of the ranch and back down MacGregor Avenue. The 1 Ok race goes up Virginia Drive, to Big Horn Drive, back on MacGregor Avenue to MacGregor Ranch. It then takes a big loop around the ranch and back down MacGregor Avenue to the Municipal Building. Budget: N/A Recommendation: I recommend the closure of MacGregor Avenue from Elkhorn Avenue to Park Lane on January 31, 2010, from 8 am until 3 pm to the Town Board, to be included on the Consent Agenda at the January 26, 2010 Town Board meeting. October Visitors Center Traffic The center experienced a small decrease in traffic in October 2009 (- 2.8%) compared to October 2008. We had 23,156 visitors come through the center this October, for an average of 747 people per day. Last year, we saw an average of 768 people each day, for a total of 23,808 for the month. It is interesting to note that RMNP experienced a 19.34% decrease in visitation in October this year when compared to October 2008. 2. October Telephone Calls Visitor Services staff fielded a total of 1,717 calls this October, as opposed to 1,431 calls in October, 2008. This is reflects a 20% increase in calls received in October 2009 over the same month last year. 3. November Visitors Center Traffic The center experienced a 12.7% increase in Visitors Center traffic in November 2009 when compared to November, 2008. We had 9,565 visitors come through the center this November, for an average of 330 people per day. Last November, we saw an average of 293 people each day, for a total of 8,485. RMNP experienced a 10.7% decrease in traffic in November 2009 over the same month in 2008. 4. November Telephone Calls Visitor Services staff fielded a total of 1,080 calls this November, as opposed to 927 calls last November. This reflects a 16.5% increase in calls received in November 2009 over the same month last year. Page 1 5. Year-to-date Visitation Visitation at the EP Visitors Center for 2009 is up 14% over the same time period last year. Through November of this year, 296,753 people have come through our doors, compared to 260,180 in 2008. RMNP is showing a 2.58% increase in overall visitation through November 2009 when compared to the same time period last year. 6. Ambassador Officers for 2010 The volunteer Ambassadors have held their election for new officers for the coming year, and the following individuals will serve in 2010. Estes Park 2009 Visitor Guide: Distribution from the Visitors Center We have distributed approximately 43,500 Visitor Guides through the Visitors Center to date. This distribution includes walk-in visitors, Estes Park businesses, other town departments, and conferences attended by Julie Nikolai. Please Note: This is the same total reported in my third.quarter report. At the end of September, all Visitor Guides at the center were sent to the mailing house for distribution to potential visitors who requested them. An update of a popular show we produced in 2002 on Rocky Mountain National Park's longstanding Artist-In-Residence program. Each artist selected for the program, which began in 1984, is required to donate one piece of work inspired by his or her stay. The Park owns and houses the pieces but has limited display space. We will be showing selected pieces from this collection that explores the many facets of the program including literature, paintings/mixed media, sculptures, photography and music. Opening reception in the National Park Service Building will be on Friday, January 29, 2010 from 5 p.m. to 7p.m. Ongoing Temporary Exhibit: Rocky Mountain Elk: A History. On display through April 25, 2010. This exhibit explores the history of elk and their interaction with humans, specifically in Estes Park. Future Exhibits: The Stirling Legacy. This exhibit delves into the artistic legacy left behind by Dave and Jack Stirling of Estes Park. This father and son artistic duo is often remembered for their community contributions, personalities, artistic representations and created characters. Featured in the Main Gallery of the Museum, the exhibit will run from May 7, 2010 through April 10, 2011. In the Footsteps of Isabella Bird: Adventures in Twin Time Travel. Kyoto University professor, Kiyonori Kanasaka, brings his long-time interest in Isabella Bird's world travels to the Estes Park Museum. After retracing her journeys, Kanasaka has produced a photographic compilation of what the lands spanning the continents look like today. Explore these incredible photographs that bring the words of Bird's voyages alive and compare what has happened to her destinations well over a hundred years later. Kanasaka's work has been displayed in Kyoto, Edinburgh, London, and Shanghai. His first show in the United States will be on display in the National Park Page 1 62-1- Service Headquarters at the Estes Park Museum from July 16, 2010 to January 17, 2011. Upcomina Proarams: January 30 - Lanny Grant: Painting on Location. Be there when oil painter Lanny Grant describes his approach to the challenges and joy of painting in the mountains. Grant completed a two-week Artist-In-Residence program in Rocky Mountain National Park this past summer. Paintings by Grant are included in numerous private and corporate collections. In 2002 he created a painting of Mount of the Holy Cross, commemorating the 1993 visit to Colorado by Pope John Paul Il. Tfie painting is now a part of the permanent art collection at the Vatican in Rome. Program begins at 2:00 p.m. Free and open to the public. February 13- Edible Homestead. Learn about the Homestead Act of 1862, signed by President Abraham Lincoln. See if you have what it takes to build a dwelling and raise crops using pretzel logs, icing, graham crackers and much more! This program, designed for children ages five through ten years old, requires one parent 6r guardian to be present during the activity. Program begins at 2:00 p.m. Cost is $5 per child. Registration opens on February 1St. March 6 - In Celebration of Woman's History Month: Linda Batlin as Isabella Bird. Linda Batlin, storyteller and author from Boulder, presents living histgry presentations of important women characters from Colorado history. She will appear at the Estes Park Museum as Isabella Bird bringing the legendary Victorian traveler to life. Bird is widely acclaimed for her published letters and sketches in A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains, published in 1879, the first deliberate account of a tourist experience in what would be Rocky Mountain National Park. Batlin is a member of the National Storytelling Network and is currently the co-president of the Rocky Mountain Storytellers Guild. Program begins at 2:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
