Please see the full body of the report for a more complete analysis of these and other topics. • Overall, 57 percent of respondents who requested information actually visited Estes Park, a much higher figure than in past years. The influence of those who requested the Vacation Planner from the Estes Park website, who are far more likely to actually visit, is clearly seen in this question. Conversion among website respondents was 74 percent, while conversion among the three print advertisements was just 26 percent (36 percent Midwest Traveler, 18 percent Better Homes & Gardens, and 17 percent National Geographic Adventure). • While those who already decided to visit Estes Park at the time of the information request are obviously the most likely to actually visit (80 percent do), the segment that is the next most likely to visit is the group that said they had decided to take a trip to or through Colorado (though not specifically Estes Park). Overall, 49 percent o f this segment ended up visiting Estes Park. Thus, the Vacation Planner was successful in convincing this segment to add Estes Park to their Colorado itinerary, a segment that might not otherwise have visited Estes Park. • As well, those who request the Vacation Planner online are far more likely to have already made up their mind to visit at the time of the request. Magazine advertisement inquirers are more likely to be considering Estes Park at the time of the request. This finding might suggest sending slightly different information to those who request from the magazine ad (the majority of whom are still undecided about their vacation plans) and to online requesters (the majority of whom have already made up their mind about visiting Estes Park) • Overall expenditures averaged $940 per party, a figure much higher than last year, but consistent with other findings in the research, including a higher number of nights stayed in the area, a lower proportion staying in accommodations they own, and a larger average group size. As a general comment, the summer of 2002, which followed the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, saw a generally more reluctant air traveler, and a higher tendency to drive for summer vacations. On the other hand, the proportion of visitors to Estes Park who used a rental vehicle was up to 35 percent, implying a greater proportion of air travelers. The online segment is largely responsible for the increase in the usage of rental vehicles seen in this summer's research. • The average party size is 3.8 persons, up from 3.3 persons last summer. The largest average travel party size is observed for Better Homes & Gardens visitors, at an average of 4.9 people. National Geographic Adventure visitors exhibited the smallest average party size, at 2.5 persons. • The average number of nights stayed in the Estes Park area was 4.0, up substantially from 2.9 last summer, a finding largely driven by visitors who made their request online. Midwest Traveler and Online Request visitors each averaged 4.0 nights, while National Geographic Adventure visitors stayed for the shortest length oftime (2.9 nights). • Overall, 58 percent said that Estes Park was their primary destination on their trip, up substantially from 36 percent in the summer of 2001; again, this finding is largely a result of the respondents who requested the Vacation Planner online. Online inquirers were much more likely to say that Estes Park was their primary destination. As well, the increase in the proportion that said Estes Park was their primary destination is consistent with the increased length of stay and increased spending.
