As I reported at the last meeting, we have been collecting customer feedback data since the exhibit opened in May. Attached is a report on the results from 124 visitor surveys. The next exhibit in the NPS building will be Mountain Air: Works from the Artist- in-Residence Program at Rocky Mountain National Park. A reception sponsored by the Estes Park Auto Mall will be held Friday, December 13 from 5 to 7 PM. The exhibit will be on display through April 6,2003. At a joint meeting of the Museum's Advisory and Friends Boards on November 16, 2001, we began a conversation about possible changes to the Museum's mission statement. We discussed the components of an effective mission statement: to state what the organization tries to accomplish in a broad sense, to provide a motivating inspiration, and to be brief. We reviewed mission statements from several other museums, noting that the Longmont and Loveland museums had had mission statements similar to ours, but had broadened their statements to include art and science. During that meeting, and at two subsequent joint meetings, on January 26, 2002 and February 8, 2002, we discussed what we would like the mission statement to look like. Among the comments were the following: Some current exhibits include art and photography, areas that aren't included in our mission statement. Also, the Museum in the past has turned down interesting exhibits because they didn't fit the mission statement, such as baseball history, death in the Victorian era, cowboy poetry, and science-oriented traveling exhibits. The question was raised as to how a mission statement change would impact what the Museum collects and preserves. The Longmont Museum's curator of collections suggested that the statement read that we will exhibit traveling art and science exhibits, and hold art and science programs, but not necessarily collect art and science or be expected to produce our own art and science exhibits. This made sense to us in consideration of our limited staff size, storage areas and funding. A draft mission statement, arrived at by both groups, was sent to the Advisory Board for their review on October 7,2002, for recommendation to the Town Board. Here is the current Estes Park Area Historical Museum Mission Statement, adopted in 1995. The Estes Park Area Historical Museum operates for the purpose of collecting, preserving, interpreting and exhibiting local history for our residents and visitors. Here is the proposed Estes Park Area Historical Museum Mission Statement, as recommended by the Museum Advisory Board. . The Estes Park Area Historical Museum collects, interprets and preserves local history, as well as presenting exhibits, programs and events, for the education and benefit of residents and visitors of all ages. Budget. None. Action. There are two openings for expiring terms. The 2003 annual meeting will be held at the Senior Center on January 7 at which time ballots will be cast for the new slate of officers and Board members. Board Project for 2003 Becomes 2002 The Board decided they wanted the modification of entrance doors to automatic- opening doors done as quickly as possible. This was due to the acknowledged difficulty in entering the facility with oxygen or wheelchairs in winter with cold, high winds. Therefore, work will be completed by Tuesday, December 10, when the doors will be operational. Senior Center, Inc. has provided the funding for the entire project, estimated cost to be about $6,000. Outreach The Director and two Board members will represent the Senior Center at an informal meeting in the Pine Knoll club house on December 11. SHARE Food Distribution, Salvation Army, and Special Transit representatives will also participate. Literature from all agencies will be available, as well as the Larimer County 2002-2003 Services Guide for older adults. Focus will be on the services and programs with sliding scale eligibility, emphasizing complete privacy and confidentiality. Thanksgiving Feast This meal was provided on November 26 and was enjoyed by 94 guests. The home-schooled students and parents again provided the setup, serving, and cleanup which allows everyone to sit back and enjoy the fellowship and food in a leisurely manner. Donations of $6 per meal allow the Seniors to receive $2 per meal as a fund raiser. Randy Repola again graciously agreed to be the auctioneer for the pie auction. Besides providing some fun and good pies for the guests, his efforts resulted in $170 for Senior Center, Inc.
