MEMORANDUM To: Community Development Committee From: Betty Kilsdonk Re: Bi-Monthly report Date: October 3,2002 Exhibits A Light-Hearted History of Tourism runs through November 17. In our effort to continually improve customer service, we have been collecting visitor feedback data since the exhibit opened in May. Customer response has been excellent and I will have a report for you at the next meeting. The Birch Cabin and Knoll-Willows Property exhibit opened September 23 with a reception sponsored by Common Scents. The large number of people who attended (about 100) was a reflection of the timeliness of this topic, given the Town's master planning efforts currently underway. We are also installing an exhibit on this topic in the Public Library display case for the month of October. The next exhibit in the NPS building will be Mountain Air: Works from the Artist in Residence Program at Rocky Mountain National Park. A reception sponsored by Estes Park Auto Mall will be held Friday, December 13 from 5 to 7 PM. On display through April 6,2003. Collections We have catalogued about two-thirds of the Jones Collection of early movie slides (747 out of 1200). There are now 7852 objects and photographs in our computer database, which makes it easy for researchers to access our materials with less risk to the objects. Historic Fall River Hydroplant Although the hydroplant closed for the season on Labor Day, we continue to receive tour requests and have scheduled 4 tours to date for September/October. A group of Front Range museum professionals will meet at the plant in November. These Phases are expected to be completed in November. We are pleased to inform the Committee that funding has been secured for Phase 111 (Landscape and Sod) from the Kinney Foundation with a gift of $10,000. This work will be done in the spring of 2003 and will complete the project. The Board and membership of the Senior Center are excited about seeing the Project become a reality and appredate the support of the Mayor and Town Trustees as well as that of the Coleman and Kinney Foundations. Meals on Wheels Drivers Honored The Linegar family honored all Meals on Wheels drivers on September 18 with the presentation of a beautiful plague. Inscription on the plague reads, =IN APPRECIATION OF *MEALS-ON-WHEELS" VOLUNTEERS - A CONTRIBUTION FROM THE MARGARET LINEGAR ENDOWMENT FUND." Fifty-three names of drivers with five years or more of service were read and will be inscribed on the plague. Ross Moor, who had driven more than 20 years with his late wife Lois, accepted the award on behalf of all drivers. Members of the Linegar family present for the award were Ned Linegar of Estes Park, Dan Linegar of California, Carol (Linegar) Smid and husband Jim Smid of Fort Collins, and Martha and Dave Siler of Ohio. The plague will be displayed in the Senior Center dining room. A list of the dedicated drivers is attached to this report. The Margaret Linegar Endowment Fund was established to honor those who make significant contributions to enhance the lives of Seniors. Last year's award went to Greg Farmer for his exemplary service in driving the Recreation Department Van in order to enable Seniors to attend out-of-town events. Board Project for 2003 Vice President Laverne Mertz has identified what the Board supports as the priority project for 2003. Fund raising will be earmarked for the modification of entrance doors to automatic-opening doors to accommodate the handicapped. Vern is investigating estimated costs. Tobi Hale has been consulted for recommendations of the modification. Our Visitors We continue to be a popular destination for valley senior centers. Sunset Senior Center from downtown Denver paid a visit in August with 42 members arriving bearing bingo games and prizes to share with our members, joined us for lunch and Museum tour. Wheat Ridge Senior Center brought two groups for a total of 44 Seniors for lunch; Wellington Seniors visited with 14 members, and 36 Seniors from Evans joined us in September. We frequently have individual out-of-town visitors drop in and stay for lunch. Without exception, all visitors give the Estes Park Senior rave reviews for its hospitality, facility and meals. We are learning both from our visitors and our visits to other Centers that the Town of Estes Park and the Senior Center Board have provided a very special and unique facility. It is the envy of all who visit. Outreach Senior Center member Dr. Irv Ringdahl also serves on the Salvation Army Board. He has asked Senior Center assistance in identifying Seniors in the community in need of financial assistance. We will partner with them in setting up brief programs at Pine Knoll, Trail Ridge and St. Vrain apartments to heighten awareness of the programs and services available at the Center and through the Salvation Army. Web Site At the request of Randy Repola, the Senior Center page on the Town's web site has been updated and improved by Museum staff member JJ Rutherford. JJ has done a great job in enhancing the page and keeping it updated monthly. .. Newsletter Board member Alice Gray has joined forces with Elda Mae Lange in producing the Senior newsletter. They have worked to bring a new and improved look to the newsletter with more articles and better photos, which has resulted in positive feedback from members. Fund Raising The Seniors Breakfast Buffets were held in June, July, August and September. The net proceeds from these events totaled $2,001. Additional funds of $496 were a result of Seniors selling parking for the Scottish-Irish Festival.
