Volunteers spent many hours in fund raising proiects: • Hosted four Saturday Breakfast Buffets for the Community. • Held a mega garage sale "Antics from the Attic" at the Fairgrounds. • Sold Duck Race tickets. • Joined forces with 9-year-old Sarah Pierce to host a community-wide pancake breakfast to raise money for American Red Cross Relief Fund. The Summer Residents Association: • Scheduled both daytime and evening weekly bridge at the Center. Social • Outings included trips to Rockies games, Boulder Dinner Theatre, Central City Opera, and Grand Lake boating. Seniors were treated to a barbecue and vintage auto rides by the Estes Park Car Club. The Center We continued to be a popular facility for private and community activities. The Friendship Force hosted two receptions. We had several wedding receptions, family reunions and homeowners association meetings. The "Make A Difference Day Faire" for various community programs will be Saturday, October 27. Meals on Wheels We continue to monitor this program to ensure the needs of homebound citizens are being met. Information from the Home Health staff indicates a similar decline in Medicare patients being discharged from the hospital in 2001 compared to 2000. There were 106 Medicare discharges in 2000 for an average of about 9 people per month. Through September this year, 61 were discharged for an average of approximately 7 per month. In discussion with nursing staff there, we were assured that referrals to them from the medical community for home care or hospice needs would be a direct referral to the Senior Center if home delivered meals were needed. OF DAYS: 2 1/2 MANAGEMENT: Special Events Department & Elk Fest Committee PURPOSE: To spotlight the majestic ELK of our valley. To encourage visitors to Estes Park to view the elk and to educate them in the habits and management of elk in our area. ACTIVITIES: Educational seminars, viewing tours, archery contest, bugling contest, art show and sales. ADVERTISING: Local newspaper, frontrange newspapers, and radio. Attendees: 10% Local 85% Colorado 5% Out-of-State 1999 2000 2001 NO. ATTENDEES 860 1253 3000 NO. EXHIBITOR BOOTHS 20 14 23 TRAFFIC COUNT US34 TOWN EXPENSES - (direct) $8,100 4,700 (not including advertising) TOWN REVENUE 5,522.00 6,119 GROWTH POTENTIAL: This event has great growth potential. Those that attended were very interested in the seminars, bugling contest, American native dancing and the tours. They were eager to learn more and thrilled seeing the animals with a guide to explain about the " rut" etc. COMMENTS: We had a lot of phone calls about this event (great advertising). The weather was very windy on Friday and Saturday, but good on Sunday. Elk were everywhere, which made the tours most successful. We changed the venue to Bond Park and Mary's Lake Lodge which resulted in the larger attendance. Not . sure that Friday evening was worth repeating in 2002. Attendance to the opening was poor, however, we did have about 80 people take the Elk Viewing Tour. Income will be lower, since we did not charge for entry as in past years. The "new" committee did a wonderful job and are to be commended for their hard work!
