MEMORANDUM TO: Honorable Mayor Baudek and Board of Trustees FROM: Museum/Senior Center Services Dept - Betty Kilsdonk DATE: June 28,2001 SUBJECT: "Willows" Property - Request to Apply for State Register Nomination Background: In 1907 Albert Birch, a reporter for the Denver Post, built a vacation home in Estes Park. When the home was destroyed by fire on December 21 that year, Birch immediately began to build a small log cabin just north of the ruins. This cabin became his family's retreat for some 70 years. It is a fine example of our region's vernacular rustic architecture. Now that the Town has purchased the "Willows" property, we have the opportunity to preserve and protect the historic and natural character of the buildings and landscape. There is an additional opportunity to put the Birch cabin and shed to use while saving their historic integrity. Nominating the Birch cabin, shed and outhouse, the Birch house ruins, and the surrounding "Willows" area to the Colorado State Register of Historic Properties would be a way to formally recognize the property's importance to the history of the community and the state of Colorado. In addition, properties on the State Register are eligible to compete for State Historical Fund grants. As the owner of a State Register property, the Town is free to manage the property as you choose, provided no state license, permit or funding is involved. In those instances, the comments of the Colorado Historical Society must be solicited. Cost: Nominal. Recommendation: To grant authorization to nominate the "Willows" to the Colorado State Register of Historic Properties. MEMORANDUM TO: Honorable Mayor Baudek and Board of Trustees FROM: Museum/Senior Center Services Dept - Betty Kilsdonk DATE: June 28, 2001 SUBJECT: Minivan - Request Authorization to Bid Background: In the Museum's 2001 budget is a 7-passenger minivan. The minivan is intended for use by all Town departments. Several departments have expressed an interest in such a vehicle for carpooling to conferences, etc. The Museum currently has a 1984 Ford Ranger (the former dog catcher truck) that has been recommended for replacement by the Fleet Department. The vehicle would be traded in or sold at auction to help offset vehicle costs. The minivan would be scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis, with no standing reservations for use. Cost: $22,000 less trade-in value for 1984 Ford Ranger. Recommendation: To grant authorization to go to bid on a 7-passenger minivan for use by all departments. 0 - 0 C) 0 0 - C\1 L. The purpose was to get feedback on their services from those who currently ride and those who do not and why. Randy Repola, Betty Kilsdonk and Jody Thompson were also in attendance. The outcome of that feedback in addition to that of Special Transit Ride Coordinator, Tobi Hale, was a change in the service to the valley. Rides were being provided to Longmont on the 3rd Thursday each month for medical appointments. As of June 21, this service will go to Loveland and Fort Collins. Senior Center Site Visits Betty Kilsdonk and Jody Thompson visited the Brighton Senior Center on May 24. The Center's meals are delivered to the site by Volunteers of America. The suggested donation for these meals is $2.00. It was by no means an "apples and apples" comparison to the Estes Park meal program. Betty and Jody visited the Broomfield Senior Center on June 27. This operation is very similar to the Town of Estes Park. The Town of Broomfield assumed responsibility for the operation of the Senior Center just over a year ago. They employ their own kitchen staff. Their suggested donation was increased in January, 2001 to $4.00. Office on Aging Site Visit Another Office on Aging site visit to Estes Park will be on July 31. This visit will be by the State Director Joan Miller and Larimer County Director Shelley Steele. Staffing Priscilla Lujan, Food Services Supervisor, is currently on a two-month medical leave of absence. Jan Thompson, call-in cook, is on staff to cover that absence. Marge Chudy, Kitchen Assistant, resigned for health reasons effective June 28. Mary Ann Welborn, currently a call-in cook, has accepted an offer to replace Marge. CASC Conference Jody Thompson recently joined the Colorado Association of Senior Centers (CASC) and will be attending the annual conference in Glenwood Springs July 22-24. Heritage Garden Four more spruce trees were planted and dedicated in an Arbor Day ceremony at the Senior Center on May 18. In attendance were Town officials as well as Larimer County Commissioners and Tree Board Members. The trees were donated by Don and June Tebow, Ross and Lois Moor, the family of Margaret Linegar and the Woman's Club of Estes Park.
