The Savvy Award for economic development marketing by a community with a population under 50,000 was presented by the'-City County Communications J& --I Marketing Association/ (3cma) earlier this month in San Antonio. Estes Park's entry was one of over 100 received for 16 awards. Other Colorado competitors included Vail Valley, Loveland and Longmont. Among the national competitors were the California cities of Riverside, Glendale, 7 Sacramento, Long Beach and LaMiranda. Arlington, TX, Phoenix, AZ and Brooklyn, OH also were entrants. -- MORE -- News Infoination Office: Market Reach, P.O. Box 334, Estes Park, CO 80517 (303) 586-6186 Rage 2 -- Estes Park' s Ad Program is Savvy Winner The local entry included materials produced and paid for by the town between June 1, 1990 and May 31, 1991: the first full color national magazine ads -- "Take a Peak," "Cloud 9" and "This Could Spoil You," a "lure" brochure, 10-Day Vacation Planner, Denver daily newspaper advertisements and newspaper tabloid inserts. "We're very proud of this award," said Peter Marsh, advertising manager for the Town of Estes Park. "It signifies our ability to communicate effectively through a results-based marketing program. And, it shows the program is valuable to the economic well-being of our community." The Savvy Award represents work Marsh directed prior to and immediately following his being named to the Town's advertising manager position. "This award was for just a portion of a continuous program," he explained. "One of the key words in the entry criteria was 'produced.' Some of the material judged was initially developed in 1989 when Marsh was chairman of the ad hoc, volunteer Second Wind, Ltd. advertising committee, but not produced until 1990. The Savvy Award was judged on the program's accomplishments based on specific goals, achievements, and community impact. Included in the criteria were overall creativity, quality of content, production, effectiveness and cost efficiency. Those criteria are particularly important in measuring the Estes Park program with others, Marsh pointed out. -- MORE-- Page 3 -- Estes Park' s Ad Program is Savvy Winner "Any program can be effective if you have unlimited dollars to spend. And a program can be efficient without spending a dime. The challenge is to balance those two extremes." The Estes Park program has been known as one of the least costly of any for resort communities throughout the state. Creative production costs (which do not include advertising placement fees) associated with the winning campaign total about $58,000. The current fiscal year's budget includes $49,181 for creative production while $261,277 is planned for media placement costs. The program which was named top in the nation included advertising to the "touring vacationer, " the weekend vacationer from Colorado Springs to Cheyenne, and those who live within a 60-mile radius. The program generated 38.5 percent more requests for vacation information over the 1990 vacation period, while reducing the cost per inquiry by 14.7 percent. Traffic counts by the state department of transportation logged a 7 percent increase. One goal of the advertising program during the award period was to increase incoming "800" telephone calls by 20 percent. When the calls were tallied, they had increased by 32 percent. During the current 1991 vacation period, inquiries have outnumbered the total received last year. The statistics show Estes Park has logged 59,001 inquiries, a 24 percent increase over the first nine months of 1990. Telephone inquires also are outpacing all of 1990. To date, 43,418 calls (a 33 percent increase) have been received. -- END --
