RESOLUTION'
li1L:I`US AS, The Estes Park .Contennial-Bicentennial Commission has learned
that the U.S. Postal Service has abandoned the use of the Estes Park postmark for
all nail sent outside of the community, and
tlIIEREAS. all rail sent to destinations outside of Estes Park will be
sent uncancelled to Longmont where it will receive a non -descriptive regional
poctnarc designation, and
VIIER1AS, the Estee Park postmark has had local historical significance
and has been in use on an uninterrupted basis since the establishment of the
Estes Parr: Post Office since Juno 2, 1876, enrt
t nEREAS, the historical development of the community is directly
related to tourism which is the principal industry of Estes Park. and
WHEREAS, the U.S. Postal Service abandoned the use of the Estes
Park postman; without notice to the citizens of Estes Park and without
realization that the use of the postmark has a direct and favorable relationship
on the Estes Park economy. and
WLR:AS, the U.S. Postal Service has provided a system at the
Longmont Forting center whereby outgoing nail from Loveland will continue
to have Loveland's postmark. thus acknowledging the relationship of a
postmark to both community pride and impact on a community's economy, and
HEI1EAS, the U.S. Postal Service arrangement at the Longmont
sorting center concerning Loveland's postmark constitutes establishment of
a precedent.
NOW THEREFORE*
BE IT RESOLVED that the Estes Park Centennial -Bicentennial Commission
opposes the U.S. Postal Service's decision to abandon use of the Estes Park
postnark because.such abandonment would have a detrimental effect on the
community and historical relationships associated with the local economy, and
BE IT FURTHER ER RESOLVED that the U.S. Postal Service be requested to
obtain an Estes Park die or suitable cancellation device for the Longmont nortin;
center in the rye manner in which a device was obtained for Loveland, and
BE IT FURTIiER RESOLVED that support of this resolution be given
by the Town of Estes Park, the Estes Park Area Chamber of Commerce, the Estes
Park Area Accommodations Association, the Estes Park Area Historical Society.
any other interested organizations. and the citizens of Estes Part.
