MINUTES OF THE ESTES PARK CENTENNIAL -BICENTENNIAL COMMISSION, 16 FEB 76
The eleventh meeting of the Commission was called to order by the
Chairman, Al Mencher, at 7:35 p.m., February 16, 1976, in Room 100
of the Municipal Building.
Present for roll call: Esther Arnold, Marcia Bruns, Charles Chaffin,
George Cowles, Ruth Deffenbaugh, Jim Dunham, Gene Dykes, Dick Hillyer,
Margaret Houston, Al Mencher, John Ownby, Ruth Stauffer, Marge Wolpert.
Chairman Al Mencher reported that three letters have been received,
each requesting a grant of S250, a third of the S750 alloted by the
State C-B Commission to the Estes Park Commission. The three projects,
already approved by the local group for share in the grant : the
historical style pageant, under direction of Marge Wolpert for the
Historical Society; 200 years of American music, arranged by Charles
Chaffin for the Fine Arts Guild; and donation of flagpole, flag,
base and plaque to the new Visitors Center by this Commission.
Motion was made and carried that these monies be so dispersed and
that financial report be made to us at—the--end--of-the-season.
Dick Hillyer reported for the commitee on a public relations show
(film from the State and slides made locally) for service clubs on
CBC activities. Already there are four calls for the show in March.
Margaret Houston, treasurer, reported that S234.60 had been collected
in the "Cents for Centennial" cannisters. Aside from this fund there
is 1146.79 in petty cash and this year's allocation of $250 from the
Town has not yet been touched. since the purpose of fund-raising by
cannisters was toraisemoney for the VisitorCenter flagpole, a
motion was made and seconded (Dykes, Ownby) that the $234.60 be
supplemented by S15.40 from our treasury and matched by the ;250
from the State to make up the $500 to be donated to the Chamber of
Commerce for erecting the glagpole. Motion carried unanimously.
Ruth Deffenbaugh announced that Town Meetings will be held in late
April, sponsored by the Library, to explain political processes in
Colorado before the precinct caucuses. Motion made and carried that
these meetings be endorsed by this Commission.
Al Mencher presented a resolution to the national, regional, and
district postmasters protesting abolition of the Estes Park postmark
(see copy ofresolutionand addresses in Secretary's hook)._ Motion
was made and seconded (Houston, Chaffin) that this Commission endorse
the resolution and urge other groups to protest the decision.
Esther Arnold, a new member of the Commission, announced that the
First Baptist Church is sponsoring a concept: by the Continental Singers
on July 4 in the High School Auditorium. Motion made and passed
unanimously that this event be endorsed by the Commission.
Charles Chaffin reported on possible future concerts. The Denver
Symphony will give two concerts, one ticketed and one subsidized.
Marge Wolpert called attention to a Square Dance Festival at the Y in N
George\Cowles announced a meeting of the Colorado Mountain Club Feb 29.
The meeting stood adjourned at 9:00 p.m.
