ESTES PARK CENTENNIAL -BICENTENNIAL COMMISSION
August 10, 1975
The fourth meeting of the Estes Park Centennial -Bicentennial
Commission was called to.order at, 7:33 p.m. on July 21, 1975. Please
see attendance sheet for record of who was present.
A report, was given for Gene Dykes that the remaining balance in
the treasury is $212.75.
The minutes were approved as written.
The Secretary reported excused absences that had been called in..
The By -Laws read: "Members who are unable to fullfill their expected
duties will be expected to resign their positions by letter to the
Chairman. Anyone who misses three consecutive unexcused absences is
removed. Inability to attend is to be reported to the Chairman or
1st Vice Chairman.
Under old business the Chamber's project of "Estes Park's Past"
was discussed. It is a $10,000 project with the Chamber matching
$5,000.
Chris Switzer reported that 12 dozen small American flags were
handed out to Rodeo Parade participants on Wednesday and Friday.
The Chataqua Arts Festival has been cancelled.
No report on Quota Club proposed project of flags from all the
states being displayed around town.
No report on F. O. Stanley Day.
The "Freedom Train" is to be in Denver sometime during the first
week of October. Local schools plan to go down to see it. Buture
information will be sent to Fred Steffens and he will convey to commission.
Ruth Deffenbaugh, from the Library, reported on "American Issues."
Visiting professor lectures will be given. "American Issues" is a
national program with a nine month series of topics. A major monthly
project is suggested with four sub topics. Co. -sponsor for "American
Issues" is Women's Club. (Eina Faulkner and Claudia Hite) The talks
will be held in the evenings on Tuesdays at the Municipal Building
beginning late in September. A supporting panel of people interested
in particular topics is needed. (Nov., Dec., and Jan are open..)
Various clubs and high school students will be contacted. Please
call Ruth Deffenbaugh for more information.
Under new business, the question of new programs for approval was
brought up. Only 12 members fo the Commission were present, so no
vote could be taken.
Dwight, Hamilton then presented a great film called, "Ever Changing,
Ever Free" based on the Bill of Rights. All agreed it would be a good
film for the schools. The Nat'l Parks will be producing 18 such films.
The official flag and papers for Estes Park will come about the
1st of August. A special presentation is to take place. Julian Ebersold,
John Ownby, John Gardiner, and Margaret Houston (chairman) will form
a committee for the celebration with information to be announced at
the August meeting. -
Another committee was also appointed: "Ways & Means" to raise
funds over next year so that. the Town may be reimbursed and future
,.,projects by the commission will have funding. Ward Crowley, John
Ramey, and Mary Rosener (chairman) make up this committee.
\ A general discussion of attendance occurred. (Please see enclosed
list.) A quorm is'needed for the August meeting. All are encouraged
to comet The By -Laws were approved in June so that 3 consecutive
unexcused absences are of concern. (A phone call to and officer will
give an 'excused absence.)
John Ramey reported that half the old film on Estes Park is fine
and the Nat'1 Park film is o.k. He plans to have them reproduced ----
with hopes of;showing them at the August meeting.
Julian Ebersold read a letter from AARP and gave it to the Secretary
for records stating that the group would be willing to work on marking

local historical spots. (Elmer Olgren - AARP contact) Mr. Rudel
is the contact for high school wood working classes for producing
signet. A map of the spots will also be produced. Dwight Hamilton
mentioned that a brochure is being worked on in Ft. Collins by Arthur
Wilcox of historical places. Mary Rosener said that Vim Bissell is
working with a group -- identifying points of historical interest
for the national registery. All felt that this was a good starting
pointfor the HARP/High school project.
Charles Chaffin talked about the concert. There's a good possib-
ility that in 1976 there will be 3:to 6 concerts with American guest
artists. Also, the Fine Arts Guild will have a kick-off in September
inviting the Air Force Symphony Orchestra back. This was suggested
as the time for the Centennial -Bicentennial celebration.
The meeting then broke up into sub -committees.
