C '�:li.lt.,�hL-BTV 1 :�.,i, ..� CG June 14, 1975 At 7 p.m. the officers met to go over agenda before the regular meeting. Fred Steffen, Gene Dykes, Ruth Stauffer and Chris Switzer were present. Al Nencher of the newspaper and Bob Gaines of the radio - station were also in attendance. It was noted that Ruth Stauffer of the.Eistorical Society has Centennial key rings and pins for sale. Also, the Optimist Club (Bob Ferguson) will be selling regulation size Centennial flags plus flag poles including installation. Fred Steffens expressed some concern that events approved by the commission be sure to have a Centennial -Bicentennial theme. The 4th of July fireworks by the Jaycees was put on the "state calendar." July 3 will be a special event by the Historical Society at the Lazy B Ranch called "Homesteaders Win Cut." It was suggested that the secretary _ot a s10 roll Of 100 stamps. All agreed that executive board meetings between regular meetings would 'oe helpful. It. was decided that officers would meet Friday, June 27 at. noon at the Plantation Restaurant. The secretary was asked to send a postcard "call" to all officers several days before that date. Gene Dykes mentioned that our commission is covered for insurance -- via the Town -- through the Hix agency. The insurance company will adda special clause to the existing policy. The question arose whether the committee must pay sales to:: when. buying supplies. It. is time to look at. fall projects. now. Subcommittees should have representatives in various groups and clubs in town. Bob Gaines was asked to look into future projects for Scouts. A brief discussion was held on Ruth Stauffer's historical articles and the idea of getting them printed. The third meeting of the Estes Park Centennial -Bicentennial Commission was called to order at 7:35 p.m. Please see attendance list. A correction in the minutes was called for: Dwight Hamilton said that on page 3 "Willow Park" should be left, out. also on page 3, the name of the group is "Up With People" The secretary reported that a postcard was received from Jim Bissell on Nay 19, 1975 with his resignation. The secretary mentioned that minutes would be sent out sooner, .and if so, a postcard would be used as a "call" for the upcoming meet- ing. Treasurer's report: past balance S241.15 2.40 thirty postcards 5.20 fifty-two stamps 10.00 roll of stamps K 1-7.00 current balance 223.55 John Ramey brought up the ouestion of whether our commission could havefree Postage because we are a government committee -,j� red Steffens told the group that a �5000 , ieoucst iS being ate Centennal-Bicentennial committee by the Chamber made to the �t i� for the new visitor's center'. Aprevious group had asked for funding in regard tO convention center. The money would be held in escrow a ^_e visitor's center opens until the Chamber can Liatcl. funds. When -2- next spring; an area for films, slides, and displays might be done by the Historical Society, a model of Estes Park around 1900 is to be built, the use of John Ramey's old film is a possibility, and a special movie is to be produced. Fred Steffens reported that the Freedom Train is to be in Denver on Sept. 23, 1975. There are 26 cars with moving sidewalks through them • plus outside displays. It is hoped that a service club in town will sponsor taking high school kids to seeit. Fred Steffens will contact the School Board, see about buses, and find out more about ticket costs. Ginger Adrian suggested we write letters in hopes of getting the Free- dom Train in or near Estes Park. A brief description was given on Aolorado Chataqua which if to be held for 3 days in Sept. (during Elk Festival) with 40-50 people par- ticipating with arts and crafts. More information on this is to come later. Bicentennial Flags will be for sale through the Optimist Club. In regard to floats in the Rodoe Parades (July 16 & 18) Nat'l Park horse contengent (mentioned by Dwight Hamilton) Small flags given to kids decorating their bikes by our commission (Suggested by Chris Switzer) The Parade committee at the Chamber is headed up by Pat Matusak. The officers will meet Friday, June 27 at noon at the Plantation Restaurant. SUB COMMITTEE REPORTS Gene Dykes - Horizons - Jaycees will raise the money and do the work themselves for a helicopter pad at the hospital. Ruth Stauffer - Heritage - The possibility of printing her series of articles from the Trail -Gazette is being consid- ered. A grant fdr the Historical Museum to build an addition with a $10,000 fund drive plus a request to the Town for $20,000 so,that the state committee will match funds of $30,000. An official application is being sent in and there will be representation at the state committee's budget meeting in mid -Sept. (Fred Steffens will get more information on the meeting.) The Historical Society is selling '76 jewelry and key rings. Al Mencher made a motion for the commission to endorse the concept of an addition -to the Historical Museum, Dwight Hamilton seconded, and all were in favor. Ginger Adrain suggested a project for the Quota Club to work on. Flags of all the states would be displayed next summer around town or perhaps around Bond Park. Larry Zellner reported he had already written all the states: out of 27 replies only 4 states were willing to give a flag.. Total cost of buying flags would be about $700. Mr. Zellner suggested that the Town Board should be told of the idea for support and perhapsindividual merchants could each buy -one flag. The proposal is to be discussed further in the Festival's Committee. Fred Steffens reminded members that they can be involved in other sub -committees and offer suggestions, etc. No other programs will be suggested for this summer -- rather, fall and winter projects are to be worked on. (Ruth Stauffer cent) July 3 - Historical Society skit - 5-9p.m. - Lazy B Chuckwagon - members of this community • who were here 100 years ago - 17 people will be represented, some by members of our commission. The question arose whether this should be the "Kick Off" in regard to becoming a "Centennial -Bicentennial City." However, since the flag and formal documents have not yet arrived, Fred Steffens suggested that the time of the Denver Symphony would be•better. Bob Mobus - Festivals - Western Justice was cancelled until July 1 since new sod had just been put down in Bond Park. The next regular meeting -will -be Monday, July 21 at• 7:30 p.m. Nothing under old business was brought up. Under new business: Dwight Hamilton mentioned that a movie called "Birthday Party" could be shown for the commission. It is about the Bicen- tennial and done through the National Park. He will present. it at the next meeting. Charles Chaffin commented that the Bi-Centennial theme.is widely overdone in the East and that nothing much is being done in the West. July 4th fireworks - at sundown - 30.-45 minutes - on the state calendar - Gene Dykes. Ruth Deffenbaugh commented on the "American Issues Committee" - the library will sponsor various discussions. Al Mencher told of Mr. Molander purchasing a 1906 Stanley Steamer and perhaps it could be in the Rodeo Parades. Fred - 3 - illeffens offered to look into it. Ruth Deffenbaugh suggested that an update on local history be worked on -- possibly by a graduate student with a grant. Bob Geurds mentioned that Summit County had this done. It was suggested that U N C or C S U be contacted. The Heritage sub committee will look into it further. Gene Dykes reported that there will be a "F. 0. Stanley Day." Julian Ebersold mentioned that in addition to the Stanley Steamer, Mr. Stanley had other inventions -- one of special interest is the dry plate used in photography. The committee will plan to get more information and help educate the public about F. 0. Stanley in all areas. The By -Laws were approved by the commission. A calendar with events listed will be placed in the library. Sub -committees were then to have discussions. Meeting adjourned at 8:40 p.m. The officers met on Friday, June 27 at 12:20 p.m. at.the Plantation Restaurant. Everyone was present and in addition, Al Mencher came representing the paper. Ruth Stauffer brought the form for the Historical Society for the grant in regard to the Museum addition. Bob Mobus offered to give a letter from the Chamber to go with the form. All discussed the newspaper article on "American Issues." Al Drencher offered to have letters of ideas come back through the paper. The program is not structured -- many areas could be covered. More will be reported at the regular meeting. The Stanley Steamer will definitely be in the Rodeo Parades with I:r. Molander driving and Mayor Tregent and Fred Steffens riding. More information on the Denver Symphony was not known. Western Justice will begin Monday, June 30. Western Justice will have 4 riders in the parade. The Sombero Stage Coach will represent the Rexall Drug Store with Western Justice people riding in it. July 3 - Historical Society skit. Chataqua -- Arts Festival cancelled. An art show of some kind will hopefully be formed. National Park will have "Historical Crafts" on August 31, 1976. July 4 - 4 sky divers with Chamber sponsoring. Treasurer's report the same. The possibility of a special sign at the edges of town naming Estes Park as a "Centennial City" was mentioned. Information and discussion occurred about small flags to be given out at. Rodeo Parades. Gene Dykes will call firm and order and Chris Switzer will pass them out to parade participants. The Estes Park Bank, the First National Bank, and Rexall Drug are to sponsor this project.
