HORSE SHOW AND RODEO COMMITTEE - REGARDING THE "INDOOR ARENA":
Mr. Rick Dill, Vice President of the Horse Show and Rodeo Committee,
spoke to the Committee regarding an "indoor arena" at Stanley Park.
Mr. Dill stated that the Horse Show and Rodeo Committee members
were frustrated with the progress at Stanley Park and the consensus
of the members was that there needed to be a master plan at Stanley
Park. Rick Dill stated that when a master plan was established,
there would be better communications between the Horse Show and
Rodeo Committee and the Town. He stated that their Committee saw
three alternatives at Stanley Park: (1) expand and update the
facilities, which would include an indoor arena, (2) continue to
flounder as they are; or (3) phase out horse shows at Stanley Park
and just have rodeos, including night rodeos. They asked that the
Town consider what the exhibitors want and what the community wants
and then arrange a meeting between the two Committees to chart a
course for Stanley Park. Other people speaking in favor of the
indoor arena were: Boots Caldwell, George Oldham, President of
the Merchants Association; John Greenlee, representing the Lion's
Club; Dave Barker, President of the Accommodations Association;
Jerry Gosh, Lee Hartman, Jay Grooters, Richard Hicks, Bob Van Horn,
Lou Canaiy, Janice Jackson, Bill Marshall, Don Corey, Jerry Brownfield,
Jim Roth, Nita Bitner, Ron Osborn, Otie Whiteside, Marion Smith,
Adie Rice, Peggy Kirk and Janet West. A letter dated March 24,
1983, was received from Dave Thomas supporting the indoor arena.
The concern expressed was that the study would be shelved. The
Committee and Mayor Tregent assured those present that the study
was very much in the forefront and would be considered along with
the other urban renewal proposals. The Committee assured the Horse
Show and Rodeo Committee that their efforts were appreciated but
a decision on an indoor arena could not be made until all the
proposals were considered.
