COORS BICYCLE CLASSIC - AUGUST 14, 1985 - REVIEW OF COURSE:
Mr. Don Hobbs, Technical Director, and Jay Cozza, Venue Facil-
ities Manager/COORS INTERNATIONAL BICYCLE CLASSIC, presented two
proposed courses for the Coors Bicycle Classic scheduled for
Wednesday, August 14, 1985. Mr. Hobbs stated the Classic prefers
Course #1, which encircles East Elkhorn Avenue, Spruce Drive, Big
Horn Drive to Highway 34 Bypass, MacGregor Avenue, and Park Lane,
due to the following reasons:
1. The course would greatly reduce the bicycle/automobile
contact that would be present on Elkhorn Avenue since
the vehicles would be re-routed at Riverside Drive.
2. Spectators would be better able to view the course from
both sides of Elkhorn Avenue as opposed to having
two-way traffic in the eastbound lanes.
3. The Municipal Parking Lots would be available for
spectator use in lieu of being inside the course perime-
ter.
4. Since the race will be run mid -day and mid -week in
August, they anticipate fewer problems with traffic.
5. The course offers more challenge and interest for racers
and spectators.
Course #2 encircled East Elkhorn Avenue, Park Lane, MacGregor
Avenue, and Highway 34 Bypass to the main intersection.
There will be two races: 12:00 Noon - 2:00 P.M. and 2:00 - 4:00
P.M. There will be approximately 45 minutes between the races.
Elkhorn Avenue will need to be closed to traffic from approxi-
mately 11:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. In placing the use of portable
trailers along Elkhorn Avenue, a temporary closure of Elkhorn
will take place, possibly during early morning hours. The
loading/tow away zones along Elkhorn Avenue are anticipated to be
the area where the placement of portable bleachers will take
place.
In an effort to contain parking of approximately 100 support
vehicles, a portion of the Wiest Drive Parking Lot, all of the
Riverfront Park and Lawn/Cleave Street Parking Lots will be
reserved.
Chief Ault informed Mr. Hobbs of areas of concern resulting from
the Classic held in 1984 and was assured efforts will be taken to
better organize the event which will include: additional
marshals, traffic cones, and detour signage, roping -off of
existing planting areas, and the speed in which clean-up of the
area takes place, listing the #1 priority as being Elkhorn
Avenue.

Barry Meyers informed the Committee, in a meeting held with the
Merchants Association, a "very enthusiastic" response was re-
ceived.
Further discussion followed concerning downtown deliveries, sales
and food/beverage concessions, and location of the concession
stands.
The Committee recommends approval of Course Proposal #1, with the
elimination of the food and beverage concession. Town Staff will
work in cooperation with representatives of the Classic to ensure
a well -organized bicycle race.
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned.
