It was determined both candidates — Bryan Michener and J. Rex Poggenpohl — would be interviewed on Thursday, March 12 beginning at 9 a.m. Sandy Burns and Scott Roederer will be the Tree Board representatives and Bruce Kane and Russ Franklin will be the staff on the interview panel. Tree Symposium Barb Boyer Buck reported there were three vendors confirmed to date for the Tree Symposium and any vendor who is properly licensed will be accepted to the Tree Symposium, until the space is fully subscribed. Barb also reported that there are account numbers set up within the Tree City funds account to properly track spending for this year's Tree Symposium. Barb reported on several ways to promote the Tree Symposium and it was decided to move forward with a utility bill stuffer to be distributed to 10,650 utility customers in April and press releases. Barb will prepare the bill stuffer and Scott Roederer will write the press releases. C Scott Roederer presented an alternative schedule and new names for the presentations; all board members agreed to adopt these changes. Arboretum A written report from Estes Park Urban Renewal Association was presented (attached). EPURA will not provide funds for a landscape architect to plan the arboretum expansion; however, EPURA will provide funds for design and construction of the picnic area adjacent to the planned arboretum expansion; EPURA plans to coordinate these efforts with the Tree Board's arboretum project. It was decided to discuss this project further after the Tree Symposium occurs. Arbor Day Sandy Burns reported on the final plans for Arbor Day at the Elementary School and her meeting with Principal John Bryant. The commemoration will begin in the Estes Park Elementary School library with member of Student Council, Town of Estes Park officials, Tree Board members, Larimer County Commissioners and Colorado State Forest Service officials. A tree planting on school grounds will follow. Tree Board members discussed ways to have all children involved and it was decided to pursue the idea of a "cookie contest" — a tree slice displayed for all children to guess how old the tree was when it was cut. Sandy will meet with John Bryant regarding this and report back at the next meeting. Meeting Schedule It was decided to meet twice in April — April 3 & 17 — to finalize Tree Symposium plans. The meeting was adjourned at 10:40 a.m. Submitted by Barb Boyer Buck, March 30, 2009 NEXT MEETING: Friday, April 3, 2009, 9 a.m. Friday, April 17, 2009, 9 a.m. Memorandum March 2, 2009 To: Barb Boyer Buck From: Wil Smith Re: Arboretum at Visitors Center I wanted to provide you with a short memo to share with the Tree Board, following our conversation this morning. As you know, the EPURA Board approved, as a small project, the improvement of the picnic area to the west of the south parking lot at the Visitors Center. Concurrently, the Tree Board is interested in expanding the arboretum at the Visitors Center. Also concurrently, Public Works is interested in consulting with the Bureau of Reclamation relative to improving the area used for annual silt removal from the river. These projects will logically be coordinated, relative to each other. In discussing this with the EPURA Board, the Board made it crystal clear to staff that they had no interest in footing the cost for any activities other than the picnic area improvements. This is due to the fact that the EPURA Board has committed all of its present financial resources to other projects. Nevertheless, let's work together on these things. If the Tree Board is interested in talking to our consultant, Bob Eck of Design Studios West, let me know and I will be happy to refer him to you. Bob is a talented Landscape Architect, who was the project manager for the south parking lot.
