Arbor Day Sandy Burns reported on the results of her meeting with John Bryant,
Elementary School Principal. The suggestion was that for this Arbor Day, there will be a
small ceremony including the school's Student Council, local and state forestry officials,
and the County Commissioner(s) with speeches and recognition followed by the
planting of 3-4 trees. Then in the fall of this year, distribute small trees to the
Kindergarten class which they can nurture and then have a larger planting - "The
Children's Forest" - for 2010 Arbor Day. The Board discussed the downfalls of this,
which included:
1. Leaving the trees inside for several months before they are planted is not
optimal.
2. The children caring for the trees would be too young to properly care for the
trees
3. The small ceremony on Arbor Day this year only includes a handful of children.
4. Much of the budget for Arbor Day will have been spent already by the fall.
It was decided Sandy Burns would spend $200 to purchase something small — like
pencils or stickers — to distribute something to all of the children in the school to
commemorate Arbor Day and that she would revisit with John Bryant to come up with
another plan for the "Children's Forest" idea.
Tree Symposium
The official "Call for Vendors" flyers was release and board members were encouraged
to distribute.
It was decided to move Tom Throgmorton to the afternoon keynote position, right
after lunch.
It was also decided to try and schedule additional breaks in between speakers.
After much discussion, it was decided to initiate a search for speakers and then fine-tune
the schedule thereafter, per input from Dave Mahany.
The meeting was adjourned at 10:30 a.m.
