General Discussion
The board discussed holding future meetings a half-hour earlier than normal to have extra time
for planning and discussion of big spring -time events. Scott Roederer moved to change the
meeting start -time to 8:30, with Barbara Williams seconding the motion. The board all voted in
favor.
Arbor Day
Sandy Burns gave an update on the 2012 Arbor Day celebration. Because of the cost involved,
the board decided to table the tree calendar/poster contest for this year, but keep the idea open for
exploration in the future. Tee-shirts and other items such as water bottles and pencils will be
given as prizes this year. Speakers have been confirmed, including RMNP superintendent
Vaughn Baker, Boyd Lebeda of the Colorado State Forest Service, and Mayor Pinkham. The
school prefers May 18th as the date of the event. Jen Imber will work on designing an invitation.
Rex Poggenpohl moved for approval of the annual Arbor Day budget of $750.00, with the
motion being seconded by Mike Richardson. The board voted unanimous approval.
Sandy proposed the purchase of seedlings as additional prizes. Thirty seedlings can be purchased
for $75.00. An additional 60 seedlings will also be purchased for giveaway at the Tree
Symposium. Sandy requested an additional $75.00 to the Arbor Day budget of $750.00, with the
board voting unanimous approval.
Arboretum
The option of hiring Biff Beard as a landscape architect for the Arboretum was discussed. The
board would like to invite Mr. Beard to attend a future Tree Board meeting to discuss his
potential involvement. Scott Zurn advised the development of a master plan for the area, which
would enable the board to pursue grants such as GOCO for additional funding.
Legacy Trees
Discussion centered around the board's future promotion of the Legacy Tree program, as well as
ways to tastefully identify the donated tree and its contributor. Rex Poggenpohl and Russ
Franklin will work on researching and preparing a proposal for this program to present to the
Tree Board. Mike Richardson suggested coordinating with the Estes Valley Rec & Park District
and the school, since both area entities have similar programs of their own.
Tree Symposium
The board decided on the date of May 9th for the 2012 Tree Symposium, with this year's
symposium being a half -day event. Dave Leatherman will be the keynote speaker. Merle Moore
will give a presentation on local plants. Other topics covered by yet -to -be -determined speakers
will include fire mitigation/emergency management and beetle mitigation. Tentative schedule is
from 8:00 — 12:30, with fifteen minute breaks between speakers.
Set-up for the symposium will include an agency room for vendor booths. Mike Richardson will
begin soliciting vendors for this year's symposium. A list of past vendors has been provided for
reference.
A flyer advertising the 2012 Tree Symposium will be included in April's utility bill.
Meeting Minutes
A motion was made by Rex Poggenpohl for the approval of meeting minutes from the November
18, 2011 meeting and the December 16, 2011 meeting. Barbara Williams seconded the motion
and the rest of the Tree Board members unanimously approved.
The next Tree Board meeting is scheduled for Friday, February 17th, 2012.
Respectfully submitted, February 17th, 2012, by Jen Imber.
