HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES Tree Board 2012-08-17Tree Board Minutes August 17, 2012 Members Present: Rex Poggenpohl Scott Roederer Steven Day Members Absent: Barbara Williams John Ericson Others Present: Russ Franklin, Scott Zurn, Jen Imber Quorum: No New & Reappointed Members New membership of Steven Day and reappointed membership of Rex Poggenpohl is on the Town Board meeting agenda on August 281h, 2012. Two more positions on the Tree Board are currently still open and need to be filled. The board discussed ways to generate interest in Tree Board activities and encourage citizens to become involved as members. Rex Poggenpohl plans to give a brief overview of the Tree Board and its functions at the August 28th Town Board meeting before introducing the new/reappointed members. It was also suggested that Scott Zurn work with PIO Kate Rusch to write an article about the Tree Board for local papers, to run in conjunction with the job posting. Current board members were also encouraged to recruit local citizens who may be a good fit for potential future board members. Budget The board has $11,200.00 left in the 2012 budget. The idea of purchasing additional trees for Town landscaping was discussed. Russ Franklin and Brian Berg will discuss where trees are needed and how many should be purchased and give a verbal report at the September meeting. General Merle Moore is interested in developing a pruning training program for volunteers to help the Parks Division with Town trees. The board discussed the possibility of starting up and facilitating this type of program. Scott Roederer again offered his resignation as of October 2012. He will be out of town for at least six months each year during months the Tree Board meetings are held. The Estes Valley Rec & Park District has a new director and the Tree Board discussed sending a representative to talk to the new director and introduce the Tree Board and its role in the Town. Arbor Day activities have been handled primarily by Sandy Burns in recent years. In her absence, it was suggested Barbara Williams could be the Tree Board representative for Arbor Day in the coming year. Rex Poggenpohl suggested that with the help of Merle Moore, he could take over as Tree Symposium chairperson this year. The board brainstormed about potential projects and goals to include on the agenda for the upcoming year. The list included such items as: • Arbor Day • Arboretum • Scott's Ponds • Legacy Trees • Kiowa property • GOCO grants • Symposium • Trees along trails • Tree planting in various locations Next Tree Board Meeting The board decided to continue scheduling meetings on the third Friday of every month. The next Tree Board meeting will be held on September 21st, 2012 at 8:30am.
