HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES Tree Board 2012-09-21Tree Board Minutes September 21, 2012 Members Present: Rex Poggenpohl Scott Roederer Steven Day Barbara Williams Members Absent: John Ericson Others Present: Frank Lancaster, Russ Franklin, Scott Zurn, Jen Imber, Celine Lebeau Quorum: No Beetle Busters Scott Zum gave an update on the Beetle Busters program. The Town has received a very low volume of calls in 2012 and the air curtain burner is running frequently with high quantities of beetle kill logs. Scott feels area citizens are very educated about the beetle epidemic and the demand for Beetle Busters is decreasing. New Tree Board Members Scott Roederer will attend the October meeting, but will be out of town for the rest of the winter, returning at the earliest in April 2013. Scott continues to offer his resignation to the Tree Board since he will be gone for most meetings and events. The board would like to continue to keep him on during the transition time of acquiring new members. The job posting that has run during September 2012 will expire on October 15t. At that time, the board will assess any applications received and proceed with interviewing candidates before making a recommendation to the Town Board. Projects/Budget The board prioritized 2012-2013 project budgets as follows: • $25,000 - Design further planting/landscaping at Visitor's Center. A master plan/landscape architect is needed to pursue available grants. The board voted to budget $25,000 for executing a landscape master plan of the Visitor's Center site. Barbara Williams moved to vote in favor, Rex Poggenpohl seconded the motion, with all present voting in favor. • $1000 - Educational programs. The board agreed to a year -long hiatus of the Tree Symposium in its present form and decided to reach out to the community through other forms of education. Ideas include articles in the newspaper, bus tours through the Estes Valley to identify beetle kill and healthy trees, beetle education for small groups, tours of CSU/forestry service facilities, RMNP tours and fire & emergency management classes. • $750 — Arbor Day. The Arbor Day celebration at the elementary school will continue in 2013. • Legacy Tree Program — Deferred until 2013 for further consideration. • Other Projects — Yearly tree planting; interpretive trail along Lake Estes. The board members each expressed their interest in projects they would prefer to be involved in, with Celine Lebeau (pending membership approval) interested in heading up Arbor Day activities; Steven Day, Rex Poggenpohl and Scott Roederer heading up education; Celine Lebeau (pending membership approval) and Rex Poggenpohl with the Visitor's Center project; and Barbara Williams helping to fill in where needed. Officer Elections Scott Roederer nominated Rex Poggenpohl for Tree Board president, Barbara Williams seconded the nomination, and all members voted in favor. Steven Day volunteered for vice-president; Rex Poggenpohl nominated him, Scott Roederer seconded the nomination and all members voted in favor. Next Tree Board Meeting The board decided to continue scheduling meetings on the third Friday of every month. The next Tree Board meeting will be held on October 19`h, 2012 at 8:30am.
