Ziegler and Peak submitted identical low bids. It was pointed out that Ziegler has set up and maintained records of previous inspection and servicing for the Town and has been a member of the National Fire Protection Association. Peak Fire Equipment just recently joined this organiza- tion in order to comply with bidding requirements. Peak's quality of service and adequacy of equipment is unknown at this time because it just changed ownership in June. The Committee recommends accepting Ziegler's bid for this year because of its excellent past performance. NEW DOOR IN THE POLICE DEPARTMENT TO INCREASE AIRCONDITIONING EFFICIENCY: The present air conditioner in the police department was designed to cool the dispatch and receptionist areas. Because these areas are not closed off, the air conditioner is overworked and has "frozen over" at times. The Committee recommends installing a swinging door at the hallway junction closest to the dispatch room at an approximate cost of $486. SPECIAL HIGHWAY USERS TAX FUND APPROPRIATION: Estes Park is expected to receive $19,700 from the Special Highway Users Tax Fund. Public Works Director Widmer commented that Coulson Excavating would pave additional streets at the same prices submitted in its orig- inal bid in April. The Committee recommends applying these funds towards additional street paving. NATURAL GAS FUELING PROCESS FOR TOWN VEHICLES: Public Works Director Widmer explained a fueling process used by the City of Greeley in which compressed natural gas is used. Vehicles are equipped with gasoline and natural gas tanks and can use either fuel readily. The Town is presently paying 870 per gallon of gasoline and the equivalent of natural gas (mileage wise) costs 320. Savings are also realized in maintenance of vehicles using natural gas. There are additional costs involved in converting each vehicle and installing a pump station. The Committee directed the Public Works Director to research further the costs involved, estimated savings, and the feasi- bility of using this fueling process. REPORTS: The State Health Department air quality van is currently parked in the football parking lot and will be conducting tests until August 18th. Tests so far show very good air quality in Estes Park. The State Highway Department has denied the Town's request to convert the parallel parking on Elkhorn Avenue in front of the Library to diag- onal parking because, historically, the change has increased the number of accidents. The Public Works Department has purchased two traffic counters in order to obtain traffic information on local streets.
