Committee, and the following recommendations were made:
1.Definition of Free-Standing Sign--A free-standing
sign is any sign which is not attached to a
building and is supported by its own structure.
2.No free-standing sign will be constructed closer
than 8 feet to any curb line, closer than 18”to any
building, and that other setbacks will conform with
the present zoning ordinance.
Trustee Tregent reported on his findings as to number of free-standing
signs to be allowed each property or business occupancy. The Committee’s
recommendation was that two only will be permitted.
Mr.Fanton’s recommendation on suggestions for directional advertising
signs was read and is as follows:
1.That Directional Signs be permitted under the following conditions:
2.All signs should be uniform, and match the existing street signs,i.e.
either 24 or a maximum of 30”in length,6”in height,with 4”letters,
metal,black on white.
3.Signs should be placed on a metal standard, encased in concrete, and
installed by the Town.
4.Only the following should be permitted on Elkhorn Avenue between the
two bridges:“Motel Area”or “Cottage Area”(arrow)
5.The Town Board should designate the site for the installation of a
Standard. At the top of the Standard,a uniform sign, reading “Motels”

6.Standards could be installed in such a manner that names could be
added or changed.
7.Other types of business might qualify in the same manner.
8.At highway points leading out of Town,to accommodation areas, the
same uniform sign “Motel Area”(with arrow)could be installed.
9.Prices of individual signs, standards, and installation can easily
be obtained by the Town.Interested operators could then be idd their
cost, and written application for a sign filed for a proposed site.
Town Board could process these and determine an approved site for a
standard.
The Coimnittee recommends the acceptance of Mr.Fanton’s proposals with
the exclusion of Item 7 (Other types of business might qualify in the
same manner.),and with the addition of mileages.
It was suggested by Mr.Petrocine and accepted as a recommendation that
no sign will be allowed where the lighting or placement will create
an annoyance to adjacent properties or create a traffic safety hazzard.
Mr.Byerly brought up the situation of roof signs as they pertain to the
National Park Hotel, and Chairman Hunter directed each member of the
Committee to study Mr.Byerly’s particular problem of signing to be
discussed at the next meeting.
Mr.Petrocine brought up the question of controlling billboards. After
discussion by all the committee,it was decided that the present Sign
Ordinance controls were sufficient.
It was suggested by Chairman Hunter and agreed to by the entire Committee
that a rough draft of the proposals of this Committee would be prepared
and published in the next edition of the Trail for public study, and
that t1e next regular meeting, the public would be invited to make their
recommendations and opinions of subject proposals.
The next regular meeting of this Committee will be announced.
