RE:Use of Grade School Auditorium Section
date:February 1,1968
The present ade school offers perhaps the last chance to secure a downtown
public meeting place of large capacity. It is recognized that the question of
funding the purchase is of major concern and that even that question can not be
fully answered until a complete usage study is made and then translated into re
modeling expense.
In an effort to further the study of the problem the Conference and Convention
Committee of the Chamber of Commerce puts forth the following ideas concerning
the use of the auditorium and related space.By related space re feel that at
least two smaller rooms should be set aside for sub—meetings, that the kitchen
facilities be included so that banquets could be catered, and that perhaps two
dressing rooms would be required for staging of productions.
If the present auditorium can be remodelled so that the floor is level or if the
floor can be terraced into several levels, then the room can accommodate large
groups for either meetings or dinners.
Such a facility would enable Estes Park to host large conventions with delegates
rooming at many hotels, motels, and lodges.A downtown location would be a boon
to retail stores in that they would be so accessible to wives, and delegates not
attending certain meetings,or after meeting hours.
In addition to convention usage, the hall would be available for concerts, plays,
travelling attractions,industrial displays,hobby shows and lairs,and perhaps
the larger meetings of clubs like Rotary,Kiwanis,Lions, and others.Perhaps inthefuturecertainFestivals, and pageants could become annual institutions to
promote Fall,Winter, and Spring activities and not conflict with the normal
tourist season.
The Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce will consider this matter at itsmeeting,Monday,February 5,1968,1:30 pm.The Chamber of Commerce wants tocooperateineverypossiblewaywiththeTownofEstesParkinanefforttoreachasounddecisiononthematteroftheproposedpurchase. While the Chamber ofCommercelackstheresourcesatthistimetoaccomplishtheremodellingofthisauditorium, the Conference and Convention Committee is prepared to recommend totheBoardofDirectorsattheMondaymeetingthatitconsiderassumingalease, should it be offered, that would provide the Town with a fair rate of return ontheinvestmentallocatedtothespacementionedabove,or to serve as the managingagentfortheTown.should this be desired. In short, the Committee is recommendingtotheBoardofDirectorsthatitdoeverythingwithinitspowertobringaboutthecreationofaTownAuditoriumthatwoulddosomuchinpromotingthebusinessandculturalinterestsoftheTown.
