ESTES PARK STUDENT ASSISTANCE ASSOCIATION:
Further information was desired to augment the presentation by Hal Hancock
and Father King at the last Board of Trustees meeting.
The "preamble" of the Association says:
"In order to insure Estes Park, the city, surrounding area and its citizens
that the peace, the quiet, and the usual business pursuits will continue,
a group of interested citizens have joined heads and hands to try to add
insurance and assurance 'things' will not only continue as usual, but be
even better: This band of citizens 'who care' feel now is the time to use
the proverbial 'ounce of prevention' in the field of a possible major
problem... TROUBLED YOUNG PEOPLE...BOYS AND GIRLS...LOST YOUNG MEN AND
WOMEN."
Leaders of the Association propose to do the following things on the pro-
posed budget of $6,000-$9,000 for the coming summer:
1. Rent a house or building near the business district.
2. Hire a couple to operate it. Preferably, the woman should be
a nurse of sorts. They should be of an age to be able to talk
to young workers and visitors to the community; yet they should
have the interest of both the "Establishment" and the young
people in mind.
3. They will cooperate with Police in seeing that all workers in
the community have ID Cards, complete with photo.
4. They will help create worthwhile activities for young working
people. They will work with the Park Service, Forest Service,
Church Groups, and even individually -owned entertainment features
to make the ID Card worth actual money in admission price.
5. Granting that most of the young people who come here are "good
kids," they will work with this nucleus of good kids to "talk
with" or "deal with" the difficult type of young man or woman
who arrives in the Village.
6. By having proper training and experience, they will be able to
counsel with young people who have problems: dope, drinking,
improper rooms or room -mates, no job, no place to live, unfair
employers and the like.
7. The center can fill a community lack by providing a service for
the "drop -ins" with problems. The center could offer a meal,
or money for a meal, offer a spot to clean up, shave and perhaps
do laundry, counsel the lost and care for or arrange for the
care of the ill.
