GRAVES - SIGN CODE VARIANCE - SUNNYSIDE KNOLL;
Mr. James Graves appeared before the Board of Adjustment requesting
a variance to allow two free-standing signs for his property which
has an exceptionally long frontage (in excess of 660 feet). Mr.
Graves submitted a letter dated August 23, 1982, signed by Larry
McConnell stating that Mr. McConnell has no objections to_the two
signs. Building Inspector Stan Jones stated that he had inspected
the property and concurred that two free-standing signs would be
appropriate for this property because of the topography of the
property and the highway placement. Town Engineer/Planner Widmer
agreed with this assessment. Chairman Wagner expressed concern
about the precedent that would be set and possible conflict with
the intent of the Sign Code. A lengthy discussion followed and
Town Attorney Gregory A. White explained to the Board that each
variance must be looked at individually and that a precedent would
not be set if this variance were approved._ Town Administrator Dale
G. Hill read the following correspondence in favor of the variance;
Nancy L. Carter........................................8/23/82
Ruth E. Holmes........................................8/23/82
Lindi Barker ............................................... 8/23/82
Margaret Houston moved that the variance be allowed because of the
topography of the property, the placement of the highway, and the
height of the power line. Member Richard A. Wood seconded^ the
motion and it passed by the following votes; Those voting es
Members Margaret Houston, Jerry Lamson, Albert Sager, Richard A.
Wood. Those voting "No" Member Robert E. Wagner.
DISCUSSION OF ALTERNATES TO THE BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT;
Member Al Sager asked the Members of the Board if they felt alternates
should be chosen for the Board of Adjustment. A discussion followed.
The Board asked Attorney Gregory A. White to check the legality
of having alternate members appointed to the Board of Adjustment.
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned.
