HomeMy WebLinkAboutPROCLAMATION Parkinson's Disease Awareness Month€tc Jarft,Qtotorabo to tiamatto a ‘WHEREAS,Parkinson’s disease is a chronic,progressive, neurological disease and is the second most common neurodegenerative disease in the U.S.,affecting an estimated 500,000 to 1,500,000 people in the United States and the prevalence of the disease is expected to more than double by 2040;and WUEREAS,Parkinson’s disease is the 14th leading cause of death in the United States according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the age-adjusted death rate increased 2.9 per cent from 2010 to 2011 ;and WhEREAS,it is estimated that the economic burden of Parkinson’s disease is at least $14.4 billion annually,including indirect costs to patients and family members of $6.3 billion;and ‘WhEREAS,research suggests the cause of Parkinson’s disease is a combination of genetic and environmental factors,but the exact cause and progression of the disease is still unknown.No objective test or biomarker currently exists for the diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease;and WHEREAS,the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease vary from person to person and can include tremors;slowness of movement and rigidity;difficulty with balance,speaking;cognitive impairment and dementia;mood disorders; and sleep difficulties;and WHEREAS,to date there is no cure,therapy,or drug to slow or halt the progression of Parkinson’s disease.Local,regional,and state volunteers, researchers,and medical professionals are working to improve the quality of life of persons living with Parkinson’s disease and their families;and WHEREAS,increased education and research is needed to find more effective treatments with fewer side effects and,ultimately,a cure for Parkinson’s disease. NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and the Trustees of the Town of Estes Park do hereby proclaim the month of April 2015,as PARIUNSON’S DISEASE AWARENESS MONTH In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and ca ed this seat be affixed. A ©2005 www.Munlc n,AL (256)739-5951 (OffrILQ%GJTt Qtc ark,ototabo ro clamatlo II WHEREAS,Parkinson’s Disease is a progressive neurological movement disorder which results in rigidity,tremor,and difficulty with balance and walking;and WHEREAS,it is estimated that 1.5 million Americans are currently living with the disease;and WHEREAS,the cause of this disease is unknown,the cure is not yet determined,and the standard treatments are through drug therapy,exercise,and Deep Brain Stimulation surgery, which does not stop the progression;and WHEREAS,increased education and research are needed to help find more effective treatments with less side effects and ultimately a cure for Parkinson’s Disease;and WHEREAS,in addition to the numerous elderly persons affected with Parkinson’s Disease,a number of young people are diagnosed daily with this disease;and WHEREAS,it is important to recognize the effects of Parkinson’s Disease on the citizens of our city and state,so that we may gain a better understanding of their needs and bring about greater hope for a cure.
