Qfte.art,otorabo to clamatto II WHEREAS,February 12,2009 is the 200th anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln and this anniversary will be celebrated by the nation throughout the year;and WHEREAS,in facing Stephen Douglas in 1858 in a series of campaign debates for the Illinois U.S.Senate seat, Abraham Lincoln drew the line against the expansion of slavery to the West;and WHEREAS,the resolute leadership of Abraham Lincoln as president (18614865)resulted in preservation of the Union, the end of slavery and a more complete fulfillment of the principles of the Declaration of Independence,and the beginning of the reconciliation of a divided nation;and WHEREAS,Abraham Lincoln’s eloquent words in public statements and addresses especially the Gettysburg Address and the Second Inaugural Address,have continued to provide inspiration for representative government;and WHEREAS,the legacy of Abraham Lincoln includes contributions that influenced the settlement of the Western states with the signing of the Homestead Act in 1862 providing for the settlement of free lands to thousands of settlers in slavery free territories including what would become the State of Colorado;Abraham Lincoln also labored to keep Colorado out of the Civil War—”to keep the plains at peace...” As president,Abraham Lincoln supported Colorado Unionists who fought a battle at Glorieta Pass near Santa Fe that successfully kept Confederates from establishing a Western Front that would stretch to California. NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that the Town of Estes Park appreciates the significance of Abraham Lincoln and his presidency to our nation and our nation’s history and recognizes the positive efforts of various organizations to celebrate this anniversary including those under the co-sponsorship of the Estes Park Library and its Foundation,the Estes Park Woman’s Club and the Estes Park Museum.
